David and Lisa by James Reach, was adapted from the book by psychiatrist Theodore Isaac Rubin, and the award winning motion picture by Eleanor Perry. Now, Plaza Playhouse Theater opens its 2013 theatrical season with this compelling, authentic and well-told story about a group of emotionally challenged teens and their struggles to find normalcy. David, only son of wealthy parents, over-protected by his mother, is tortured by his mania against being touched. Lisa, who has never known parental love, has developed a split personality and is in effect two girls, one who will speak only in childish rhymes and insists on being spoken to in the same manner. The play follows David and Lisa, and their fellow students, through their exhilirating progress as well as retrogression, under the guidance of Dr. Alan Swinford and his staff. Fellow students include Carlos, the gang banger, overly flirtatious Kate, Sandra, an over-eater unwanted by her glamourous father and step mom, Josette, an anorexic, the meticulous over achiever Simon obsessed with chess, and Robert. David and Lisa and their heartwarming story is filled with laughter, heartbreak, suspense and recognition of some of the challenges our teens face today. This fast moving play accentuated by a simple setting and a minimum of props is well suited for teens, adults and seniors.
