I've been eating at Rose Cafe for twenty-five years and it's, without a doubt, the BEST MX food I've eaten. I'm from AZ, so the food is a little different from the MX food I grew up on, but I am a complete fan. I have never over time been met with such kindness from so many people as I have there. I try to eat there at least once monthly. In all the years I've frequented the place, I have NEVER gotten sick, which says something BIG to me, as I've gotten sick at least once at every other SB restaurant I've eaten at over the years. In fact, when I think I might be getting sick, I go to Rose Cafe and eat their salsa or menudo, and I DON'T get sick. The prices have always been right. Compare them to other local MX restaurants, and you'll see. They also pack a great to-go box. I can't understand how anyone could complain about the food or service. The restaurant is busy, busy, busy at all hours, and when there's a rush the servers aren't going to be extra-hospitable; they can't be. My advice to the negative commenters: try it again.

The food was not good. Chile verde is one of my favorite dishes and I think they may want to get a new recipe because it was pretty bad. I have had much better Chile verde at other restaurants in Santa Barbara. They do know how to make a margarita and rice and beans but I think from this experience it is all that I can state. The waitress was really rude, she would have rather been somewhere else at the time. Please stop the attitude or get a different job there are many other Mexican restaurants in Santa Barbara where the people who wait on you are not rude.

Their chile verde was rojo and not tender at all. The enchiladas rojos suck too and the waitress was rude and basically the only thing good was the margarita.

I seem to always hit this spot at the right time. I crave it and they deliver. It has never disappointed. The food is comforting and flavorful and I have had many of their dishes. The service is friendly and unobtrusive. This is just a great family, doing a fine job of feeding me, and my friends, good food, for a long time. Thank you!

We used to go here a lot, then just got lazy because we live downtown. Got a LivingSocial deal and immediately went. The food was as good as I remember it; the rice is closest thing to my grandma's! The service was excellent even though we presented out coupon when ordering - usually the kiss of death. We will make that l-o-n-g trip up to the mesa again soon!!!!

Good Food - Good Service, almost TexMex

My wife and I had our first, but not last, meal there yesterday. Service was prompt and cheerful. The menu was diverse, the food was delicious, and the portions were generous. The salsa was too spicy for my wife, but just the way I like it. Our food came just the way we each ordered it. It's the best we've had since we lived in Texas.

We have dined at Rose Cafe on the Mesa since the opening. The service is fast and friendly. The food is delicious and unique. I have NEVER had a bad meal there. When my kids come home for a visit, Rose #2 is the first place they crave to eat, be it for breakfast, lunch or dinner. Salsa is the best, green enchiladas are the best and tacos are the best. Even the rice and beans are the BEST. My friends from HS who live in the Bay Area love Mexican food and we/they had one special restaurant up there. It was the only one we loved. But when they come to visit they head straight to Rose Cafe on the Mesa. Sometimes they even ask me to bring them tacos when I drive up there!!!

True, the salsa is extremely good but not a good enough reason to eat at this restaurant. The service was better than previous reviews stated, although when we arrived the hostess (I presume owner) was unpleasant and disinterested. I had the enchiladas on recommendation (and apparantly the reason why most people come back). The chicken tasted processed and they were swamped with a flavourless sauce, goo on a plate. Not good food at all.

Chili Colorado sauce is worth the price of admission

Highly recommend anything with the red chili colorado sauce. Got a burrito to go so can't speak on the service but the people in there were nice including one of the owners who said she had been there for the 30 years its been open. Slightly pricier than a typical burrito place but worth it for the sauce. Food out extremely quick. Bummer, no chips included. Salsa awesome. Lots of seating.

I dined here 3/30 and like review below I also have been a long time customer, going to the Rose on La Mesa since 1987. Ever since the remodel the service has gone down hill it seems. The prob appears to be the NEW "young servers" that have no appreciation for the new OR returning customers. I dread a couple of the new servers because its always the same cold shoulder treatment. After getting sat down its always a timely wait just to order drinks, with no smiles, no refills. The only reason I go back is for the wonderful flavor and selection of the food, but I now have cut back my frequent visits to the Rose from once a week to maybe once every other month :( I hope they read this and improve their customer service, I miss it...

A long time customer

I have been going to this location since it opened. Long time favorite. Last week we went in on Wednesday night - a bit early. Got the small combo. OMG. That was the worst excuse of a taco I have ever eaten. Obviously pre-made hours previously. Disgusting. Where was the delicious spiced beef and cheese? It was unidentifiable nasty grey stuff. Sorry Rose, you have always been my favorite and you are a nice family. I will never eat there again. My husband makes much better. Thanks for the memories as you were a sentimental favorite but what you served me last week was truely horrible.

Food good...Service sucks

Went here and were treated like a nuisance. We sat ourselves and ordered. About 2 minutes after our food was delivered we got the check (no explanation or "take your time"). We proceeded to eat our meal while the waitress glared at us like we needed to pay ASAP. We finished our drinks and didn't get refills. We put down our card when we were done eating and the waitress picked up with a quickness and without a word. Placed the receipt without a word and proceeded to leave. Good food but very unfriendly service. Haley location an entirely different world, definitely go there!
