Horrible, don't bother
Reviewer: Ana from Santa Barbara, CA
The hot dogs were blah, no creative toppings, nothing special at all (better at home). Most of the machine's soda didn't work (syrups were out). Just all around below average. Sad, because it isn't hard to make a good hot dog, the owner is definitely missing an opportunity considering it's the only hot dog place in town.

Great corn dogs!
Reviewer: Becca from Santa Barbara, CA
I finally tried this place out last night and they have one of the best corn dogs I have ever tried! Their french fries are amazing also. I will definitely be returning! :)

WORST CUSTOMER SERVICE I HAVE EVER EXPERIENCED!!!
Reviewer: Ally from Santa Barbara, CA
WORST CUSTOMER SERVICE I HAVE EVER EXPERIENCED!!! I went here last Sunday night and the cashier was extremely rude and even cursed at me. It was so bad that the guy cooking the food came out and apologized for his coworker being a "b*tch". Never going back. Who ever owns this place needs to hire a new staff.

Woof
Reviewer: jinelle from Santa Barbara, CA
Fast and friendly, good menu, nice sides, efficient operation except they forgot to treat their products with love. Dessicated, un-flavorful Nathan's hot dog which should have been a juicy, tender classic. Obviously had been heated up for way too long - and this was on a busy Saturday. No excuses. Won't be back. I like hot dogs but they are just serving food here, not creating a hot dog appreciation society. Which they should for this under-appreciated All American snack.

Nice place to get a dog
Reviewer: Glenn from Buellton
They've got Nathan dogs there, it worked for me. They've got fixins out you can dress the dog yourself and really good fries there along with a good soda fountain. They also have some spicy varieties too. A nice place to go when you are hankering for a dog on lower state. Server was really nice.

Very Dissapointed!
Reviewer: Dave Wintermute from Santa Barbara, CA
I stop at Mad Dogs every time I pass Santa Barbara. I was coming back from Pismo (4/24/2011 9pm) and stopped there for a dog. My daughter ordered a regular dog and got a skinny shrivled over done hot dog which we paid $4 for. I asked the guy if we could get a better dog and he ignored me. He was too busy giving his buddies free beers and cheese fries and hot dogs. Not one dollars was passed for a lot of food. I asked the guy again and he said "no thats what you ordered". I left vowing NEVER TO COME BACK.

Late night
Reviewer: Cas from Santa Barbara, CA
Mad dogs is the BEST! I was totally wasted last weekend and when the bars closed I knew right where to go. Mad dogs is the best place for some late night weiner slang.

Great food, great people!!
Reviewer: Sunny from Denmark
I've been to this place many times while I worked in down town Santa Barbara in 2007. The owner, Eric and his staff are really nice to customers and their food is great! I will definitely go back when I visit Santa Barbara again.

Just Bad!
Reviewer: Jason from Santa Barbara, CA
The hotdog taste just like the one at 7-11 and was so overpriced. I wish there is an alternative late night hot dog place.

Great for those late nights out
Reviewer: Nicole from Santa Barbara, CA
I love Mad Dogs. True, they're a little overpriced but they're open late and I've seen their staff put up with some pretty unruly drunk cutomers. I love watching the pay-per-vew UFC fights at O'Malley's and because they don't serve food we usually pick up chili fries and dogs and eat with a cold beer while watching the fight. Can't beat that! They're also very tasty when you're looking for a bite to eat after those late nights out, within walking distance of most clubs and always hot and delicious.

A Hankering for Hot Dogs
Reviewer: Elena from Montecito, CA
After watching a documentary on hot dogs, I had to go to Mad Dogs. The classic hot dog was juicy and hot. The bun was far from the average that you'd get from a supermarket. The bread was very tasty and dense with sesame seeds. And they have sauerkraut for their bratwurst which I appreciated. Last of all the young man behind the counter was very polite and helpful. I got better service at this tiny place than some of the fancy restaurants in town!

Excellent place to eat
Reviewer: Victoria Napolitano from Carmel-by-the-Sea, California
I am from Carmel and my son wanted to have hot dogs for dinner. We stopped at Mad Dogs and I was pleasantly surprised to meet the wonderful couple who owns it. The churros are to die for! Thanks, Victoria and Tyler

Too Pricey for a store bought hot dog
Reviewer: Jason from santa barbara
Maybe I'm crazy but it seemed a bit dirty in there and the hot dogs seemed just like the ones I can buy at the store and microwave at home. The beer was good and the french fries were good too... But the dogs need some work.

One Very Unsanitary Employee
Reviewer: Diane B. from Goleta, CA
The hotdog was great, the young man with the ethnic background was very knowledgable and was hard working. The second college age young man was standing in the door most of the time talking to people and petting thier dogs. (It was the afternoon of the Big Dog Parade)It was when he went into the kitchen area and started working with the food WITHOUT WASHING HIS HANDS that I decided that I would NOT be going back!! You may have a good product, but how can I trust that I will not get sick from your unsanitary employee????

Satisfactual and Very Yummy
Reviewer: Karen from Santa Barbara
My 13 year old daughter had a corndog and fries, which she described as "satisfactual and very yummy. There was a good ratio of corn and meat. The fries were very crunchy and very, very, very, very yummy. My husband had the Nathans hot dog. It was wonderful. Nice long hot dog was thin, so that the bun to hot dog ratio was very pleasing. I had a "Hawaiian shave ice" which was closer to snow cone consistency rather than the shave ice I remember from Maui. Generous serving, but still rather pricey at $3. The staff was friendly. They prepared the dogs to order, so it took a little while, but worth the wait.

Great Dog
Reviewer: David Brown from Lima, Peru
In order to gain energy for my Memorial Day sales shopping trip, I stopped into this restaurant for a quick hot dog. I got a Hebrew National with chili and chedder cheese dog and a root beer and black rasberry hawaiian ice. Great food and the owner, who clearly takes pride in his establishment, provided excellent service. I came a long way to eat a great hot dog and it was worth it.

Gotta go at least once
Reviewer: Ana from santa barbara, CA
I took a short lunch today and decided to stop in, I had a reg. dog with bacon, cheese, and grilled onions. The food is great-filling, fresh, inexpensive, and tasty. The owner of this restaurant is both, generous and friendly. The owner gave me a discount for being an employee in the area, he wanted to give me a couple of vip cards, but had ran out. Instead, he gave me a stack of Mad Dog $1.00 cards to hand out to my co-workers. While I waited I helped myself to some condiments, I thought I had everything I needed...when my food came out I was offerred ranch for my fries and that was the cherry on top. As I ate a LASH construction guy took a break from the state street renovation and came in to get a bite and drink. Once again the owner impressed me he told the guy he was welcome to come in for refills all day thanking him for the work he is doing for our city. The owner's attitude was so refreshing, it's hard to find a business in santa barbara were the owner works, provides consistent (outstanding)service, and great food.

I'll add to the raves of the chili cheese fries
Reviewer: lemonjelly from santa barbara, ca
I knew there was at least one rave about Mad Dogs' chili cheese fries, so I gave them a try. I was not disappointed, these are a deal. The fries have a light seasoning that adds great flavor and a perfect crunch when you bite into them. For $2.75, they are a similar price to chili fries at other local fast food places, but they are so much more delicious. Service was very good, too. When I need my french fry fix at 2 am on a weekend, I know exactly where to go.

CHILI CHEESE FRIES!
Reviewer: Mark (the trolley guy) from santa barbara,ca
In old town, open late, and super tasty? Next question? The dogs are great, but don't miss the CHILI CHEESE FRIES. This could become a very dangerous habit!

good and nice people
Reviewer: Stefanie from Santa Barbara, CA
Well, I absolutely loved the chili cheese dogs. The people are extrememly nice too.

Update
Reviewer: Dario from Santa Barbara
Please, at least comprehend others' reviews: The point of the comparison with Costco was not (of course) to claim that Costco's hotdogs were the "benchmark" by which other hot dogs should be measured. That would be silly. The point was that when you pay nearly 3 times as much for a hotdog at Mad Dogs as at Costco, you should get a MUCH higher quality product. Sadly, Mad Dogs' was not even as good as the Costco dog. That's what is truly embarassing. It's true that there are few midnight food choices in SB. But that doesn't make Mad Dogs' food any better. For a great hot dog--one that is worth the price--try the Surf Dog in Carp. And PS--I don't have any financial stake in any of these places.

Good late night eats
Reviewer: Minah from Santa Barbara
Please, comparing any hot dog place in town to Costco is embarrassing. When did Costco become the benchmark of a good hot dog. How silly. Mad Dogs is a great place to go for late night munchies. There is little competition for midnight food and Mad Dogs is now here with better service and better prices than the others. And here's why Mad Dogs shouldn't be compared with warehouse shopping fast food: they offer a variety of dogs, sausages and wursts, including a vegetarian option, and offer a number of fresh topping choices, adding on a combo is a good value, they serve beer on tap, they serve shaved ice, the staff are friendly, personable and can offer recommendations, and they're open super late on weekends. This is a great alternative to the late night greasy pizza (with its indefinable "drunk tax") on State Street. Those are my compliments. My criticism is that the buns were sadly not warmed up. A quick steam or half a minute on the grill would be oh so nice.

Overpriced
Reviewer: Patrick from Goleta
I have to say as an avid hotdog fan, I was disappointed. Food was overpriced and quality was no where near my expectations set forth by the other hotdog venue in Santa Barbara. Honestly, I could of got the same dog at Costco for half of the price. One positive note, I liked the beer on tap and the service was good.

Hey Dario...
Reviewer: Mike from SB, CA
I'll have a Ball Park combo, with fries and a soda. Please put extra seasoning on my hot dog, and stick my bun on the griddle for a few minutes so it is warm like the hot dog. Also, please give me well done grilled onions. I, like you, understand grilled onioins.

Just OK for the Price
Reviewer: Dario from Santa Barbara
I tried Mad Dogs this Sunday afternoon. I had the Ball Park Dog combo, with fries and a soda. It cost almost $6 and was not worth the price. The hot dog was smallish and not that fresh or flavorful. Seemed like it had been sitting around for a while. The bun wasn't warmed or toasted. They did put "grilled" onions and sauerkraut on the dog, but the "grilled" onions weren't: More like heated onions, chopped too finely to add much flavor. Why not actually grill them so they are somewhat carmelized? That would add a lot of flavor. By itself, the hot dog was $3, but not any better than the Costco dog. The fries were fresh, but nothing special. Overall, I don't recommend it. SurfDog down in Carp still has the best dog in SB for the price--they understand grilled onions. I plan on trying a chili dog at Mad Dogs and I hope it's better.

Great dogs, great hours
Reviewer: John Dickson from Santa Barbara, CA
I had Mad Dogs' "Ball Park Frank" today with sauerkraut and it was so excellent, I ordered another. In addition to their daytime hours, Mad Dogs is open until 3am Thu-Sat. Until Mad Dogs opened their doors for business, there was no late night food in the bar zone on lower state. Offering a quick $3 meal up until 3am downtown is a stroke of genius, in my opinion. Proof: hungry club goers now form a line out the door during the late hours to get some of Mad Dogs tasty dogs.
