Not much of a restaurant. Just somewhere to take shelter., 1/8/2016

We were downtown with our friends from out of the country, showing them the town. In tow were our three-year old and their three-year old, along with a baby. The kids were getting hungry for an early dinner, so we asked what they wanted, and of course the international food of preschoolers is PIZZA! By proximity, our choice turned out to be Barbarians, which sounded fine to all those present. Only a few folks were milling around inside the building, having a beer, watching, a game, etc. We got the kids settled with some activities, skimmed the menu and decided to order a large veggie pizza, a big salad and some simple butter parmesan pasta. The guy behind the counter was nice enough, had some issues with the terminal and credit card machine and had to call his boss, but no problem, said our order would be ready in 15 -20 minutes. Fine. 5 minutes later, took my daughter to the bathroom, not great but not dirty, walking by the kitchen. The chef (cook? random dude hanging out in the back? I donít know) was just sitting down in the empty and quiet kitchen doing nothing. Ok, whatever. Checked in with the guy at the counter about 20 minutes after ordering, assured the food would be out shortly. 10 more minutes go by, the kids are getting squirrely, and weíre taking turns walking them out on State to keep them calm and away from the handful of bright redemption games along the entry wall. Again, food coming soon. It took a full 45 minutes to get our pizza, and another 5 minutes to get our plate of simple pasta. The pasta and salad were college dorm room quality. The pizza was worse. Totally uncooked crust, paper thin, dripping wet. I kept trying to cut some on the paper plates with the junky plastic forks, and kept getting mouthfuls of wet paper plate. For nearly 60 dollars, this was a joke. We had to take the kids to get tacos, and for our friends from out of town, this may be the start of an international incident. Iím all for local business, but honestly, just donít go here, and let it move onto greener pastures so something worthwhile can end up in this rent-heavy space.

I have eaten here a couple of times and their pizza is delicious. The toppings are so fresh and high quality . The sauce is tasty and the dough is flakey and light. My favorite pizza place in town! I just wish they weren't located in downtown so it would be easier to pick up pizza.

We tried out Barbarian's for the first time at 5:30 on Sunday evening. We had a 16" 1/2 sausage-mushroom and 1/2 basil-tomato-anchovie. It was very tasty with an ample amount of toppings. The thin crust is reminiscent of east coast pizza. The service was friendly & pleasant. The space is large with sufficient seating and has no fewer than 8 large flat screen tv's around the room with 3 or 4 different broadcasts going on. There is an extensive beer and wine offering. This looks to be a good addition to the lower State st food business. Hope to see them stick around for a long while.
