HORRID FOOD
Reviewer: mairead from Santa Barbara, CA
Awful - worst hamburger - worst salad - worst steaks with brown stuff on them- worst calamari( tasted of nail polish) and dinner for 4 was $91 dollars inc 2 beers and no dessert. Two starters we shared....OMG A HORROR..nice server .....

Great simple food, TV a little annoying.
Reviewer: Nancy from Santa Barbara, CA
I eat here often and not because they have fantastic food, but because the food is good and reliable. The salad bar is great. They have fabulous homemade ranch dressing, for dressing enthusiasts. Their wings are great as well. Nothing fancy, but good solid food and not very expensive. Staff is friendly but I've found I need to often approach them to order, get the bill, be seated, etc., because I'd wait forever otherwise. But they're friendly when I approach them so that works for me. The TV is ALWAYS on sports channels which can be annoying.

Don't waste your time here!!
Reviewer: Mike from Santa Barbara, CA
After being seated immediately, we sat for nearly 10 minues before being greeted by any employee. I was given a setup that had, what appeared to be, bloody nose feces on the napkin surrounding the knife and fork. It was disgusting! I immediately went to the rest room where I found the area to be in need of being cleaned. After washing my hands I did not find any paper towels in the dispenser. I informed a staff member (waitress) of the problem. The crab cake we ordered was cold and had to be sent back to be reheated. Upon ordering our entree, we both ordered a salad which was NEVER delivered to our table. The Linguini and Clams was mediocre at best. The clams were the size of a dime and that is being generous! However, my GF's salmon was pretty good. The staff also cleaned the salad bar (which was right next to our table) before we were finished eating. This was loud and unprofessional in my opinion. By the way, we ordered an ala-carte salad and not a salad bar. When I advised the waitress of the no salad situation, she simply said "Oh really?" She did not offer to fix anything. Finally when we left we both used the rest rooms. This was approximately 1 hour after my first visit. The towel dispenser had not been visited and was still empty. Like I said...DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME OR $$ IN THIS PLACE!!

Good food, hit and miss service
Reviewer: Andrea from Santa Barbara, CA
State and A is convenient to the Arlington and Granada and there is plenty of parking in vicinity. The food has always been consistently tasty and well prepared though the service can either be great or lacking. I've had a waitress who hustled and got my husband and I out in time for a show. I've also had a waiter who, in a nearly empty restaurant, had to be flagged down to order 15mins after being seated. I recommend it for the food but realize you may or may not be pleased with service.

I LOVE IT
Reviewer: Danielle Simms from Santa Barbara, CA
I recently came to santa barbara to attend the university and happened to find this place with my mom while visiting state street. Since then, I take all my visitors there, it is very affordable and every meal I have ordered is very delicious. Havent tried the salad bar yet though. It has a nice vibe, relaxing and pretty casual. I would definately recommend to any of my friends or family.

Imagine my surprise
Reviewer: David from Santa Barbara, CA
When a resdtaurant down the street was full, my friends decided to nab a table here. I yelled into my phone trying to stop them while I was finding a parking spot but it was too late. The first thing that happened was a waiter came out and asked us to move because a band was setting up on our spot. Was this band a surprise? Did the band fairy come to visit them? I am guessing State & A knew about the band coming on in 15 minutes and still sat us there. The rest of the night was a bit of a surprise. The fish and chips I ordered were actually pretty good. I wanted some BBQ sauce for my friesd and it came out warm and tasted homemade (?!?). The fish was good too. And the server (this time a girl), was super friendly. I was shocked.

FANTASTIC!!

This palce was great. My family and i went there for dinner and we had the best service and the best food. All of the waiters/waitresses were so friendly and kind. We will definately go back there as soon as we can:)

Worst Dining Experience Ever
Reviewer: Nicole from Santa Barbara, CA
I eat out often and have been to more restaurants in SB/Goleta than I'd like to admit. Because of this I have had great experiences and terrible ones, but nothing tops this place. I saw a movie last night at the Arlington that got out at 9:30pm. My boyfriend and I walked past State & A bar and grill and looked at the menu. We asked a waitress if the kitchen was still open. She assured us it was. We sat down and as soon as we sat down we were asked what we wanted. Being new customers we asked for a minute. That was the last time we saw anyone. We sat in a booth in front of a TV. The bartender, afer about 5 minutes, shut the TV off. I was a little surprised but was even more shocked when he yelled at me from the bar "DID YOU WANT THAT ON??" I smiled and said "no, that's ok." He again yelled at my boyfriend "DID YOU WANT THAT ON??" How rude! I was getting impatient but I know what its like to be near the end of your shift (I was a server for many years) so I waited. Two young men sat in the booth directly behind us. A young waitress went up to them and started having a conversation w/them about their mutual friends etc. Then she served them free chicken quesadilla she had boxed up for herself. We had been there about 10 minutes already and walked out. Oh, and I just went on their website to contact the manager, the "Contact Us" page is blank. Figures.

One of the last good deals on State Street
Reviewer: Joe from Santa Barbara, CA
This restaurant has been around forever (more than 20 years) and it is in an upswing. It feels like a new place and it has gone to the top of my list for casual dining on State. When you add the fact that it has an outdoor patio to enjoy our weather to the great prices, I cannot believe you can walk in and get a seat almost anytime.

Love it!!!
Reviewer: Christie from Santa Barbara
I love this place!!! For the price that you pay you are getting a good meal at a great price. Its not fancy, but the food tastes great and the staff is friendly!! A gret place for locals or an out of towner that doesnt want the fancy dining. I will go back mamy more times!!!!

Salad Bar is worth the additional $2.50
Reviewer: Robert from San Diego, Ca
State and A has been at the same location for decades. In the restaurant business you don't stay long if you don't provide a quality product. Santa Barbara has so many great restaurants to choose from too. The food can be average at times, but always fresh and tasty. The salad bar is outstanding. Every salad bar item is fresh and there is a lot of variety. Add the salad bar to a main dish selection for just $2.50. It's worth every penny. And eat outside on the patio and enjoy the wonderful ambiance of State Street and Santa Barbara.State and A is a "no miss" on any visit to SB. There are lots of "don't miss" places to eat, put State and A on that list too.

I found my favorite salad here
Reviewer: Kya from Santa Barbara, CA
It's a fun local corner pub. I love the spinach/goat cheese salad, but be sure to add grilled onions to it. There is local live music, a big TV screen so the place fills up during sports games, and the Turkey burger isn't bad either. I like it that they have Fat Tire Ale..New Belgium Brewing is a very socially responsible company. State & A is consistent and fun. As a local, it feels like a neighborhood pub that I feel fond of.

Salad bar, BABY!!!

I LOVE THE SALAD BAR AT STATE & A. The margarita's are good too. The live music on thursdays is a must, always a good time. The best part is our usual waitress J.J. She's super cute and a real sweetheart. LONG LIVE RANCH DRESSING!!

Always visit State & A when in town.
Reviewer: Bob from Los Gatos, CA
Food isn't outstanding, but reliable and consistent. The salad bar is very good. I have never been disappointed and have no problem recommending it.

Better than average!
Reviewer: Danno from Upland, CA
Definately gets the job done, the food is average to above average and the service was awesome! our server went out of the way to accomidate us and made our evening an enjoyable one!

It gets the job done
Reviewer: Jeff from Isla Vista, CA
This is my failsafe. If I'm ever headed downtown on a weekend and don't want to wait an hour for food, I'll go to State & A. It's not the greatest food - in fact, far from it - but it's probably comparable to a coffee shop. If you go, I highly recommend going to the salad bar - it's an extra couple of bucks, but worth it. It's the kind of food you would make for yourself at home, but this way you can enjoy a draft Newcastle at the same time. Not necessarily worth the price, but always worth the convenience.

Probably wouldn't visit again
Reviewer: Megan from Buxton, NC
The food was ok, so was the service. They do give large portions but other then that not much to say. Probably won't visit again

average

Whenever I come here, I find myself drinking heavily....must be because the food is lackluster, although the drinks are well-crafted. Stick with bar basics, like nachos and jalapeno poppers.

alllll good!

it was fun but not the greatest atmosphere! the food was great! the service was good as well! a great local place!

Incredible Nachos

The nachos are just WOW!
