Reviews by the General Public

Maybe.......maybe not, 4/26/2013

You can see the daily "special" on their website, but it doesn't mean they will have it when you get there. Until now my wife and I have been a weekly regular, but not anymore since they haven't figured out how much of a popular dish to have available as opposed to,let's say, shepherd's pie that even if they were open til 2 am.they probably would not sell out of. Filet mignon, jack daniels ribs, beef stroganoff.....there probably won't be any for you.

It is a winner every time., 4/23/2013

We have been coming to Fresco cafe at 5 point since 2003. The friendly family atmosphere along with fresh made food makes Fresco's one of the BEST places in SB to dine. The owners and staff are friendly and conscientious in their service to us every time we eat there. If you're looking for a great variety of desserts that taste fantastic - Fresco is the place for you. A great locally owned business with a personal touch. We love Fresco!!

The freshest, best tasting food in town. We have been faithful customers since moving to Santa Barbara in 1997. Excellent and affordable catering as well. Jill and Mark are winners!!

Love Fresco, but some feedback, 6/14/2012
Reviewer: carolyn from Santa Barbara, CA
Had the delicious kale salad last night. Wonderful. Love the lemon dressing and hope they will add it to the regular choice of dressings. A little feedback: The option of a side order of brown rice is a great idea but what was served was so overly salted or soy sauced or prepared spice mixed, that it made it inedible. Also wish they would serve better bread in the basket. A simple crusty baguette would be better than what they offer. Thank you.

My review previously ("My other kitchen") took Fresco to task for a little slip in service. All's well again. I always enjoy my food at Fresco, and Jill and Mark make it the friendliest place to eat. Everyone is family at Fresco.

Thanksgiving dinner
Reviewer: Al and Shirley Eichstaedt from Santa Barbara, CA
Jill and Mark, As you know, we and our group have eaten outside at your 5 point restaurant Wednesdays for several years. This year my wife was recovering from a knee replacement, so we ordered our Turkey dinner from you. The quality of the turkey dinner, side dishes, and desserts was a 10! The Turkey was wonderfully glazed, yet moist inside. All of the sides were cooked just right--we just spread all of it through 2 ovens and our warming drawer to heat it to perfection. We thought it equaled anything we have done at home, was a lot easier , and allowed more choices for individual preferences. We'll be back for many Christmas and Thanksgivings from now on! Thanks so much. Al and Shirley

My "other" kitchen
Reviewer: Barbara from Santa Barbara, CA
I adore this restaurant. I like the food, the people and the location (blocks from home!). I, too, have noticed a little slip in the service. I've been going to Fresco since it was just a little hole in the wall, and I've always had very good food there. This latest crew of servers aren't quite like the ones a year or two ago, that's for certain. I have relatives who have told me about some screwed up orders and long waits. Jill needs to give the staff a New York-style pep talk, I suppose, and then all will be right with the world again.

Gorgonzola Walnut Salad Addict
Reviewer: Mika from Santa Barbara, CA
I have a problem with the Gorgonzola Walnut Salad; I can't give it up. The dressing is just amazing! In general, I have always been happy with Fresco. Last time I also got a layered mousse which was delightful, lovely flavor, light smooth texture.

Consistently GREAT!!
Reviewer: Linda from Santa Barbara, CA
Yes, people do read these reviews - especially the owners - so I personally would have to have a really bad experience somewhere to impact someone's business by writing a mean stingy review. I just can't complain about a single item i've ever ordered at this great eatery - a little slice of heaven on earth. Thank you chefs & staff for doing the wonderful job you do every day. Thank you to the owners for understanding that your customers appreciate your focus on delicious AND healthy foods. I better head over now for dinner!

My once favorite restaurant - gone to the dogs.
Reviewer: Jacqueline from Santa Barbara, CA
Today was the very last time I will pay hard-earned money to eat at Fresco in the mall on State. I ordered a meat loaf sandwich on ciabatta and fries. The fries were good - the meat loaf was grainy and absolutely tasteless and smothered in what I think was a version of mayo.IT HAD OVERPOWERING ONION, OLD TOMATOES AND BROWN-AROUND THE EDGES LETTUCE! IT WAS AWFUL AND INEDIBLE! I tried to get the "servers" attention, to no avail. She just stood and stared. The prices are at the high end for a not-too-clean restaurant that doesn't have waiters, where you stand in line for quite a long time to order and then the food is brought to your table by a zombie. The checks have a place for a tip, which I foolishly left - for what service? Sorry Fresco, this was my last visit. Does anybody actually read these "reviews" - Especially the owners?

Cupcake Frosting - "Like Buttah"
Reviewer: Mel from Santa Barbara, CA
Ordered the red velvet cupcake and the frosting was awful. If would like to lose a few pounds but your sweet tooth is getting in the way then Fresco's is the place for you. The cake was delicious but the frosting tasted like a brick of butter. Instead of throwing it away like one of the other reviewers I used it to butter my toast for breakfast the next morning. They look nice in the display counter but like they - don't judge a book by its cover.

Don't Eat The Sweets!!!
Reviewer: Kathi from Santa Barbara, CA
We had a wonderful breakfast wrap and ordered some sweets to eat later. OH MY GOSH.....These desserts were the grosses things we ever ate. My mistake we threw them away. We ordered the coconut lime cake which was so beautiful but it was so dry it was inedible. All you could taste from the frosting was LARD. I never ate a frosting made from lard. It was disgusting. Next was the red velvet cupcake. This thing was so mouth watering gorgeous and piled high as a kite with this lard icing. Don’t they know it should be made with cream cheese? This too went into the trash. The apple tart was OK….it too was very dry. If you are going to sell day old desserts don’t charge full price. We threw all the desserts away. Just like throwing 14.00 down the garbage disposal. $8.95 for a breakfast burrito and a few potatoes……

Fresco Flamenco
Reviewer: "Flamenco Chuck" Keyser from Santa Barbara, CA
Disclaimer: I don't actually work at Fresco, but they do put up with my Flamenco guitar most Saturday evenings... That said, I was a customer of Fresco long before I began playing there for obvious reasons - IMO, the food is delicious, inexpensive, and the people that work there are very nice indeed at all levels. Although the menu is Californian, the feeling is very Spanish/Mediterranean, with arches on the patio (and great acoustics). My favorites are the Caesar Salad, the Club Cheeseburger, and the New England Pot Roast in Wine Sauce (when they have it). I admit it, I may be biased, since I really enjoy playing in the Fresco ambience. And for a musician, venues like Fresco Five Points are highly prized indeed......

A must eat...
Reviewer: Cheryl from Martinez, CA
I live in the Bay Area and whenever my family and I come to visit my mother-in-law, Fresco is a must eat for us. It starts with courteous service, followed by GREAT food and you can't leave without trying one of those magnificent desserts. You haven't had chocolate cake until you've had it from Fresco!
