Sweet Masa., 12/17/2012

I read your review that they have the best masa for tamales. I have made tamales for over 50 years and I was very disappointed with this product. They must have put sugar in the masa because it was extremely sweet so much so, that I could not use it. I made 2 test red Chile tamales and they were not even edible. I am here visiting and wanted to make tamales for my friends, what a disappointment. The sad part was that we bought 10 pounds of masa that had to be thrown away. I also found the help to be unfriendly when I asked for a smaller amount of masa; they said they could not sell me a smaller amount only what they had already bagged. We ended up going to Foodland just up the block and were able to get the masa needed for our tamales. They say that their pan dulce is good; maybe they use masa to make it.

great food, bad service!
Reviewer: Jenaro
from Santa Barbara, CA
The bread is very good, unfortunately the service staff do not know what they are doing! More than once I have seen them take care of one person ordering a cake (and they are not sure what to order) while the line gets longer and longer! I have seen and I have just left because of the wait. I no longer go there as a result. There are other bakeries in town with just as good bakery (lower milpas and Haley st to name a few).

best Mexican bread in S.B
Reviewer: Dawn
from Santa Barbara, CA
I have lived in SB for 30yrs. and no Mexican bread in town comes close to being as good as La Bella Rosa Bakery.I always thought Mexican bread was a heavy, dense type of pastry until I tried theirs. La Bella Rosa has taught me what 'good' Mexican bread should be like: light, airy and flavorful. I agree with other reviewers, their staff is not the friendliest, but what the heck their food is the bomb and I'm not there to make friends. ;P

Best Tri Tip Torta I've ever had
Reviewer: Curtis
from Santa Barbara, CA
A co worker told me that they had good Tri Tip Torta. I went there to check it out and I was AMAZED! The Tri Tip was delicious and tender. The bread was freshly made and SO GOOD! I would definitely recommend it to anyone. The fresh smell of the other baked goods are so tempting while you are waiting for your sandwich. So be careful!

Great Food, Ok service, recommended "to go"
Reviewer: Glenn
from Buellton
Not really an eating establishment, after getting the tamales I was not given any untensils and they have no salsa, napkins either. Server I had was not very cheerful or happy to see me. The food was great, you can get some tamales to go(if you want them hot prepare to wait 10 minutes, I would recommend just heating them at home). The pastries were really good. Not really any "american" style donuts I could see, more of a hispanic bakery with some pastries and tamales/tortas to go.

I can't believe I have lived here for 12 years and never tried this terrific place. And its like being in Mexico- everyone is very friendly and welcoming even when the place is crowded at 8AM. The pastries are delicious. I can't wait to go back and try the tamales and tortas. YUM.

Great Selection of Pastries
Reviewer: Ginger
from Santa Barbara
Wow, stopped here for a pastry the other morning. What a great selection of breads and sugar goodies they have. I bought an apple filled empanada and a cream filled thing, it was $2.75. Although what I got was well worth the price, I could have gotten four pastries for the same amount at Daniel's on De La Vina. Not quite the selection though.

Best cake in town!!!!
Reviewer: barbs mathou

Rosa has made several of our cakes for the past five years and we keep going back for more! She's made two customized wedding cake for us, very delicious and our friends still talk about them. We've also ordered birthday cakes from her as well. Her cakes are very light and fluffy, frosting is made out of whipped cream- not sugary, grainy or overly sweet. Fantastic chocolate and raspberry bavarrian cream =) They only negative thing I can add is that her shopkeeper can be a bit more nicer to her customers. People come in hungry for your tamales and happy for your sweets. A smile goes a long way =)

The Best Place in Town
Reviewer: Del Mutavcic
from Santa Barbara, CA
I was born and raised in Santa Barbara and have to say La Bella Rosa's is the best place to buy masa for tamales and pasteries. Their tres leches cake is out of this world. Their portions are huge and satisfies my hubby. He loves the tortas!
The staff is not that friendly but who cares, the food is great.
