Amazing Sushi!! Hard to go anywhere else, 3/4/2014
Reviewer: Alaina from Santa Barbara, CA
Sakana has the best sushi in town!! They make every dish beautiful with amazing sauces. I don't ever have to use soy sauce here, which I like. I don't think they have a bad roll. I have allergies to certain fish and I have NEVER had an issue here. I have gone to other sushi restaurants in Santa Barbara and everyone of them have given me some sort of reaction. I wish they would open a second location - this restaurant is always packed - for a good reason.

What a delight!
Reviewer: Kevin from Santa Barbara, CA
We're almost hesitant to write too glowing of a review for fear that Sakana will become so popular that the wait for a table will grow too long. The fact that people are willing to wait outside for a open table speaks volumes of the quality of the food here. We haven't been to our former local sushi locales since discovering the flavors of Sakana. The beautiful, artistic presentation of the dishes enhances the experience. The Merry-Go-Round is an amazing taste sensation. Service is always pleasant and attentive regardless of how busy they are.

Best in SB

The habanero yellowtail melt was bomb.com! We also got woked edamame and the crunchy rice ahi tuna press box which were both delicious. Defintely recommend this place.

I call Sakana my happy place.
Reviewer: Tressa from Santa Barbara, CA
On par with Nobu and every other top sushi i have ever had. People complain about the sauces, im not a fan of a lot of sauce either so I simply order dishes that do not have them. Same as any sushi restaurant. They have amazing, fresh, and light fish. I highly recommend the mango salmon roll and the protein roll. Also if you're adventurous like me, the specialty nigiri called the MSC is to die for. Great lunch special too. GO SAKANA!

Take out sushi orders always wrong? Great sushi though
Reviewer: CRedmond from Santa Barbara, CA
I have been eating at Sakana for years and its not much of an argument the sushi is fresh and good. However, I am just curious…. Pretty much every single time we order take out they get our order wrong- 8 out of 10 times. Asking to repeat the order back def. helps but then something else will be missing like ginger and wasabi. Does anyone else have this issue???

It's okay.

The rice is different from what I'm used to. It wasn't white nor was enough vinegar used. The fish on the sushi was good portioned. But the iruka and uni was gooey and NOT fresh at all. BLECH!

Seriously, this is the BEST SUSHI IN THE WORLD
Reviewer: Danielle from Santa Barbara, CA
This is literally the best sushi in the world. I've seen Kelly Slater here before which is also a plus. My favorite rolls are the Habanero Lobster Melt and the Pink Bear. I rarely ever want to eat anywhere besides this place. Even my friends who don't like sushi like this place. Brought my mom in the other evening, direct quote - "best sushi I have ever had" - and she lives in coastal orange county where sushi restaurants dot the horizon. I recommend this restaurant to everyone I know and don't know because it's the best and the only time I have eaten comparably good sushi was in Kauai. I'm actually heading there right now. Yes they make it saucy, yes it is awesome.

My favorite restaurant EVER!
Reviewer: Mari from Goleta, CA
Sakana is the best restaurant! I love all of the rolls and every time I go there, I'm surprised by something new on their huge menu or I have something that I love like the Habanero Yellowtail Melt Press Box or Salmon Island Style Roll. I dream about the sushi at Sakana...it's truly the BEST! If you don't like the sauces, then don't get them...but you are totally missing out!

GREAT PLACE--
Reviewer: Harley from Santa Barbara, CA
Harley Hall-----Exc. Chef University Club of Santa Barbara. I enjoy this place everytime I dine. Seared albacore press box with yuzu is a great finisher. I personally enjoy the sauces for the first couple of rolls & then just eat around them for the rest, switching to wasabi & soy. Very inventive in roll selection. I worked for a restaurant in San Diego that won best sushi 10 of 13 years. I find Sakana to be just as good, if not better.

Perfect
Reviewer: Mamey from Santa Barbara, CA
For the people who don't like sauce and prefer plain sushi: ORDER PLAIN SUSHI. The saucy rolls are the best, but if you dont like that you can always just order a plain spicy tuna instead of getting something you dont like and insulting it on this website. You would have to be a complete idiot not to enjoy Sakana. Y

Hard to find better.....anywhere in the world
Reviewer: L Dog from Santa Barbara, CA
By far the best sushi in town. So many inventive rolls, sushi & sashimi dishes it is going to take multiple visits to find your favorites. To all the reviewers that hate on the sauces - just don't order rolls with sauces! I do agree that some are presented with a little too much but My god, learn to speak to people and order without. I for one love the flavors. Be sure to try the Basil Fluke, such wonderful interesting flavors for sushi, very unique.

Over-Sauced, Overworked Americanized "Sushi"
Reviewer: JB from Santa Barbara, CA
I feel bad for the tasty fish that gave up their lives only to meet their final destiny on a plate gloped up with 4 kinds of mayo or shoved into a roll with cream cheese and other abominations. I understand the appeal of this place for diners who are into the bastardized, Americanized version of "sushi" where sauces and other additions are used to make you think you aren't eating raw fish. However if you like real sushi and the delicate and amazing taste of high quality simply prepared raw fish this is not the place you are looking for. Even if you are into non-traditional sushi the offerings here are WAY overworked and over seasoned leaving you to wonder what the main ingredient you even ordered was. These are trademark signs of an executive chef who lacks confidence in their product and execution. Better sushi offerings elsewhere.
