Bad food, just ok service, 7/10/2007

We went here for a family birthday celebration and were treated to average wait service and well-below average food. It took 10 minutes after being seated in a completely empty restaurant for water to be brought and menus provided. One of the specials, a fish, came out smelling so strongly rotten that we couldn't figure how the waiter carried it out of the kitchen without passing out. We asked to have it taken back, and didn't seek a substitute as it killed the appetite for further food. A medium rare burger and medium rare steak were both charred on the outside; while the inside was the right color, all you could taste was burned grill. We didn't bother mentioning this to the assistant manager, as he argued with us about the fish being rotten despite the overwhelming smell that everyone at the table had commented on (including the waiter who took it back). On a brighter note, the desserts were fabulous. Too bad about the rest. We'll never eat there again.

Good food, Less than stellar service, 11/8/2006

Went with three friends for dinner on a Thursday night. The restaurant was more than half empty, and the server either jumped on us to order (wine, entrees, etc.) or was nowhere to be seen after we asked for just a moment more. The food was excellent; we all had fish entrees, but our request to split salads was met with two salads for four people. I've never had to rotate plates at such a "classy" restaurant before. Not what I expected at all.

good but not worth the price, 9/23/2006

I came here with a bunch of girlfriends. They were very good about accomodating a large group and the service was not delayed because of it. I had the sea bass and gnocchi. Both were very good, but kind of a weird combination even though they were suggested together. Could have been better if the sides were integrated into the main dish. Good food but definitely not worth the price.

Lunch once a year/Excellent, 3/28/2006

My husband and I live in Northern California. We drive to LA once a year for art and food. We always stop in Santa Barbara for lunch. In 2005, we stopped to eat and had the wonderful farmer's salad selections. I was obsessed with the taste for days. Thus, we stopped in 2006 during the winter. We had the salmon. Again, delicious!

Had a terrible experience just that one time, 2/20/2006

We've only been there once and didn't want to go back so for what it's worth this was our experience: the food took over an hour to arrive and then when it did, it was not done right. Had to send an appetizer back and a steak that was supposed to be medium came bloody rare. One of our drinks was over diluted and had to be sent back twice. There is just a lot of restaurants in town that we didn't feel the need to go back. Maybe one day we'll give it another try.

just okay, 7/25/2005

I've tried 31 west 3 times now and it was okay...not good enough to go back. Although the menus for lunch and dinner sound good, I've had overcooked meat, bland soup and a very mediocre salad for way too much money. It's just not worth the price. My expectations were higher.

Park on the street, 4/27/2005

Valet parking costs $2 at lunch time at $6 at dinner time. Park on the street or at the Chapala parking lot if you want to avoid this extra expense.

Amazing food, 3/19/2005

In my opinion this is by far the best restaurant in Santa Barbara. Ive been going up on weekends for years and have eaten everwhere. The menu is very sophisticated and well thought out, the treatment of fish is phenomenal, particularly the raw interpretations. Presentations are delightful, love the big modern plates everything comes on. Service is casual (like all SB restaurants) but very well trained. The dessert doughnuts are wickedly good!

Excellent steak sandwich!, 3/16/2005

I had a very good steak sandwich with onion rings for lunch.
