excellent food, service is improving, 1/30/2006

I've been to this restaurant 4 times now and the food continues to impress. The service, while still leaving a little to be desired, improves each time. I love the atmosphere and design of the space. I would recommend this restaurant to anyone looking for good Italian food, the closest to the real deal in feeling and flavor I've had outside of Italy.

Close to Italy, 12/2/2005

Owner seems very much a nice guy - always warm to us. This was a good treat for us. The food was excellent, my pasta was good, and the pizza was very tasty like real italian. Some of the servers need to focus a bit more. The owner I believe is from Italy, he owns Le Umbretto across the street. He gets all kinds of food in from Italy - as best as I can tell. The sardines were old and crunchy, but he is trying to run it pure European style. I think that the owner manages the places like he is in Europe. Us americans sometimes dont work as hard as restauranteurs from Italy, so I think he need to find good help. I hate to say this but we need to acknowledge this. There are so many choices on the menu, and so many very, very good wines that the restaurante may benefit by decreasing the # of choices to help simplify the services. His wine selection is the best in town. Also, Umbretto is a bit pricey with small portions, even by Venice and Santa Barbara standards. To be 5 Stars - Increase the Size of portions by 20%, simplify the menu. Manage the staff closely. John

Potentially good, but falls short, 11/29/2005

Overall the food was tasty, but I've been there a few times and each time the dishes varied in flavor; obviously a sign of inconsistency. The owner pranced around the restaurant without doing anything except eating his own food and drinking his wine. Service was friendly but relatively uninformed about the wine. Chaotic kitchen stress transmitted loud and clear through servers while the owner dilly dallied without aleviating the stress. Too bad, the restaurant had potential, but seemingly poor management makes it a flop.

We've never been anywhere in the U.S. that had authentic Italian pizza. Eclectico is a delicious and authentic dining experience. The waitress was friendly and knowledgable about the Italian regions. The food is very well priced and the wine list is impressive! If you are looking for real Italian pizza, go to Eclectio...We'll be back with all our friends and family! Ciao!

terrible service, 11/7/2005

I second Nick's experience below. We had to repeat our order twice to the waitress so she could write it down correctly, then 1/2 hour later she brought the food, and one of the dishes was wrong. (It was ravioli, like we ordered, but the other ravioli on the menu.) We sent it back, meanwhile the other (correct) dish was getting cold at the table, and we still didn't have the 2 glasses of wine that we asked to be brought with the food. After 10 minutes she brought the right dish and we *reminded* her about our wine. She said it was "on its way". Surely 40 minutes is long enough? Eventually she did bring our 2 wines but she gave us each the wrong ones. I got my date's and she got mine. Diners especially rely on servers to pay attention to this since you can't really tell if you get the wrong wine until you taste it. But evidently, to our server, red was red, just like ravioli was ravioli. If I go back to Eclectico it will only be at slow times on off nights; evidently the weekend crowds are just too much for the staff to handle.

Food delicious...Service awful., 11/5/2005

Went one night and picked up curbside take-out. The server who took and delivered our order was awesome. So impressed with the food that we made reservations for my 30th birthday. So many problems with service I don't know were to begin. Requests ignored/forgoten, some food items never even ordered from the kitchen. We requested that the waitress bring glasses with no ice for our chilled sparkling water, waitress replied "too late, the busser is already bringing glasses with ice." When entrees were served I counted 25 empty glasses (beer, wine, sparkling water) that needed to be cleared or replenished, we only had 7 people (5 adults, 2 small children). Glasses were never subsuquently cleared. We had to get up and chase down server to order more wine/water. Table maintanence was awful. Owner popped in like a movie star and walked around pouring wine to patrons he was familiar with as we waited 25 minutes to have our entrees cleared. Needless to say, we skipped dessert. Priorities completly out of wack, we will never return. It's sad because the food is actually pretty tasty.

I went opening night and considering it was opening night , the food was awesome. The wine selection was limited for the evening, but good. The waitress was great. She was very nice and was up for the challenge of my questions about the resturant. I am dying to go back, but just haven't had time. I would suggest it to anyone looking for a new fun place to eat.

what a gem, 10/7/2005

This is a lovely little restaurant. The pizzas are great--creative toppings like gorgonzola-pear and duck-brie-wild mushrooms, but also classic Italian pizzas. Very good crust, some of the best in town. And, they are available for takeout until 10 pm!!! The wine list has only Italian wines, but still good diversity for such a small list. The pasta dishes are thankfully not overloaded with garlic. I'd really like to try the pumpkin ravioli with black truffle butter! They have a huge communal table, which is a cool idea. Hope to try it out sometime...But the patio is nice, too. The staff is very helpful, and I didn't find them pretentious at all. The only bad part was having to choose what to order--go with friends so you can try it all!!

good restaurant but a bit pretentious, 10/3/2005

The food is fresh and delicious, carefully prepared and well balanced, with a good variety of italian wines. The atmosphere is inviting and cozy while also modern. But why do they tell us the exact brand of their crystal stemware on the menu?
