I recently moved out of Santa Barbara and this is one of the places I miss the most. The food was always great (my favourite is the Dandi breakfast burrito with extra avocado) but they do great pancakes as well. The staff are friendly and always made me feel welcome and I love the relaxed atmosphere of the place. I always visit when I'm back in town.

First, who the heck eats a day old omelet?? Yuck to the 100th degree!! Second, science and biology say that a 1 day old cooked omelet cannot grow mold that quickly. The review below is either full of lies and false accusations or a review by a general hater. Steve's is a great breakfast place with fun service. The potatoes are bomb and so are the pancakes!!!

Steve, you are an amusing fellow. I would love to be at the family dining table with you for Thanksgiving. Pass the biscuits.

OK Food - Horrible Owner, 5/16/2013
Reviewer: Jim from Santa Barbara, CA
When we went to Steve's Patio Café I didn't eat my omelet (just the biscuit). Full disclosure - I did taste it. Took it home, and the next morning I went to eat it and it appeared to be very moldy on top (after tasting it and it tasted like mold). I called and asked for the owner after getting attitude from the cook. She also gave me attitude and said she didn't believe we were there just yesterday, but said if I could prove with receipt I got it the day before and show her the mold she would make a new one. But she refused to start making it while I drove there as she doubted what I was saying. Got there she said she confirmed I was a liar because I told her I put it in the fridge right away as we only lived a couple of minutes from there - but she said it actually took me FIVE minutes (I didn't leave right away and had to park and walk). Then she tried to claim it was black from the avocado (which wasn't black at all and wasn't on top of where the mold was). But after 10 minutes of pleading she finally had the guy make me a new one - BUT.... no potatoes because she couldn't see mold on them. But that would have been impossible because the mold was basically the color of the Obrien potatoes. Besides - she could tell I had eaten a couple of them, and I was trying to put one over on her. Then she went and showed a big table of eight guys the omelet I brought back and ridiculed me to them. UNBELIEVABLE - all the time I was trying to stay calm and nice because I was at her mercy - too late to not pay for the thing. And I really wanted to convince her I was a nice honest guy. The smirk on her face as she was accusing me of trying to scam a free meal made my blood boil. I don't know for sure it was mold, but whatever it was, it was gross. I even said we LOVED the place when we were there (which was true) and had planned on coming back often (true) and it didn't seem smart to call the customer a liar and be nasty. She responded that we were never allowed back there. I thought I was in the twilight zone!!! Meanwhile, I was looking around at the other tables, and the customers were smiling in that shocked I-can't-believe-this-is-happening way. Now when I watch Kitchen Nightmares - I will believe the outrageous owners' attitudes are possible. Oh - and the new omelet was burnt and greasy - nothing like the very good one from the day before.

I eat here about twice a week or so and the food is always hot and soooooo goood. I order the short stack and the o brian potatoes. Best pancakes in town..definately homemade... The staff here call you by name so it almost feels like home....although it is a small kitchen and when its really busy food may take a little long to get out...its so worth the wait. Great portions. They serve breakfast all day and there lunch specials are the best!

great place!, 5/4/2012
Reviewer: Ryan from Santa Barbara, CA
I haven't even finished my breakfast yet and I feel obligated to write a review. Let me start by stating that my meal is fantastic, I wouldn't change a thing. The California omelet was hearty and filled with fresh ingredients, the obrian potatoes were cooked to perfection, not too overdone but not at all under cooked and the biscuits and gravy can't be beat. The service as well as the atmosphere was very much up to par with the quality of the food. I'm looking forward to coming back soon.

Locals Love This Place!, 1/13/2012
Reviewer: Ronaldo from Santa Barbara, CA
A little hard to find; but well worth the Google map effort, this small, locals favorite is consistently good with the friendliest service in town. The owner is a hands on operator, backing up his crew where ever he is needed. Nothing fancy, just everything done quite well. The best poached eggs in town, consistently perfect time after time. Open for breakfast & lunch, the prices are unbeatable and the menu variety is great, featuring specials every day. Try the "Mommalette" if you have a hearty appetite. Secret-they have parking up the driveway, behind the restaurant when the street parking gets tight.

Great locals place, 6/4/2011

Once a month a group of "old giuys" get together for breakfast here. We really like every thing about Steve's. Try the macadamia nut pancakes with real maple syrup. Top notch! For another time try the bagel sandwhich or the two poached eggs with teo strips of bacon. They have the usual sides and the potatoes are really good. Service is very friendly and personal and the price is rigjht. It ain't fancy but it sure is good!

Wow- so good! The bacon waffle was crazy good! My chile verde & eggs were delish! The service was perfect - all for less than most breakfast places. Can't wait to go again.

This review is to assist visitors to Santa Barbara..LOCALS KNOW Steve's has been consistantly great for years. Small, but you can find a seat. I love good patios, and the've got one. Casual kicked back. Breakfast and lunch only, but you're going to want to enjoy SB's sea food for dinner. Google map the address, or call for directions,(805)687-FOOD. If you show at opening (7am) DON'T sit far LEFT or RIGHT at the counter, those are where the hard core dailies hang....ENJOY

A real treat!!, 7/4/2010

Down to earth good food and good people! Simple and very satisfying. Not a bad thing on the menu, good prices, good portions, can't say enough you have to try it for yourself. It's the only way to fully appreciate the quality. My paticular Favorite is the Huevos Ranceros special with the Cile Verde on top. Highly reccommend it!! Also the biscuits and Gravy are the best I ever tasted. Enjoy!

A neighborhood favorite, 3/4/2010
Reviewer: Nick from Santa Barbara, CA
There is nothing extraordinary about the place. The food and service here have been consistently good for many, many years though and the prices are among the most reasonable in town. It's a standard kinda locals diner. I've been eating here since the late seventies and it seems that the only dramatic change over that time has been the name. Actually, I take that back! I noticed that their flour tortillas changed recently and they are now a better, more authentic type than you get most places. The latest owner, Steve, has upgraded the place some. There is now an ADA accessible bathroom... the old one was very small and was through their little kitchen area. He's also added european style coffee facilities.

Best breakfast in town, hands down., 2/20/2010
Reviewer: Mike from Santa Barbara, CA
This place has always been a favorite and we've always had great food and service here. But today it was at an even higher level. They cooked up the old hash browns with the bell peppers and onions underneath. We had the scramble with diced bacon, spinach and cheese that was delicious plus home made sausage patty, salsa, biscuits, gravy and eggs...all this for less than $20. Exceptional food with friendly, sincere service! Thanks!

One of the best!, 1/10/2010

Been here a couple times. Service and food has always been great. Now I come back hoping the "fiesta chicken" will be on the specials that day. (its some sort of lean, marinated spicy chicken) that they mix with eggs for an omelet, or my favorite, --the breakfast burrito--. Add some hashbrowns and some avocado and you have the best, leanest, lightest, breakfast burrito in town. Staff is always great and the patio is relaxing. great local spot. A+

best chicken-fried steak in the county, 7/30/2009
Reviewer: Dan Montello from Santa Barbara, CA
Many excellent breakfast and lunch dishes, with a real locals feel. It serves the tastiest and lightest chicken-fried steak with sausage gravy in town, probably in the county. I have tried almost 10 others in town, and Steve's wins hands down. Try it and tell me I'm wrong..

steve's is the kind of place you didn't think could be real. it's like going to the town in the andy griffith show.... steve is usually there, and he's a friendly, unpretentious guy. his staff is the same, they work hard because they seem to really care. the food is great. the view is great. no rush. i guess this all rubs off on the customers because strangers just end up talking to each other. i usually leave pretty happy. life is good. ...i wish more things were as straightforward and beautiful as steve's. you should go.

Stay open later!!!, 6/3/2008

We have been meaning to try this place, but had no idea it was mostly breakfast. Showed up at 1:00p.m. on a Sunday and found out on Sunday, they only serve breakfast (and they closed at 1:00). But they offered to make me a sanwich, and it was really good. The people with me really liked their breakfasts too. The waitpersons were super sweet and fun. I know "Steve" probably wants a life, but we don't want him to have one, we want him to stay open later so we can eat there more often....

Great food/service , 5/10/2008
Reviewer: Peter from Santa Barbara, CA
I have eaten here at least a half dozen times for breakfast. The surroundings are simple and dare I say unimpressive. The food however is very good. I would not ordinarily order a pork chop for breakfast, but was encouraged by the waitress the other day. Wow, that was excellent, thick and juicy, nicely seasoned and served with scrambled eggs, a bowl of fruit (strawberries and watermelon) and a toasted english muffin. Top it off with a latte and we're talking some good eats! I have never found it crowded and the quality of the food and service is much better than any of its competition (cajun kitchen for example).

Read the reviews(sometimes we have found "other place" restaurants to be given over-exuberant comments...but this place is very right-on. Met the owner Steve, and he is a neat fellow who REALLY cares and DELIVERS on yummy food. The whole place is simple...but how do you say it..."shows attention to detail"- The double cappuchino's tasted RICH, concentrated, and of high quality coffee. WARM Real maple syrup(so what if it's a buck more...this stuff is expensive...please don't be cheap and think the world should pay your mortgage for a $3.95 waffle--don't you want him to make enough to stay in business to deliver quality food?)(waffle was quite French-quality thin and properly slightly crunchy)-Tasty non-greasy large sized bacon that was really almost all meat and no fat....eggs were of the tasty free-range taste..cooked right(not over-done...whew..)(oh by the way..we got a side of the corned beef hash(good deal for $2.50..and liked its isn't the $12 kind that you get at exotic restaurants with shredded meat etc...but its pure, delicious...and uses very small diced potatoes that are NOT overdone or mush like other places.)Haven't tried lunch yet...but sure will now. I feel guilty about letting this place out of the bag. Hope this doesn't bring too many people in..but this guide is how we learned about it in the first place.--JUST DON'T TELL TOO MANY OTHERS...FAIR ENOUGH?..if it gets out of will be depressing.-

THE breakfast place on/near Upper State, 11/25/2007

This is an excellent breakfast place and a great value to boot. Try one of the specials or one of the combos listed at the bottom of the menu. I think the breakfast food quality and value for your buck beats Farmer Boy, Max's, or the Treehouse nearby on Upper State.

Reviewer: Jon from Santa Barbara
I would give Steves a 5/5 but I always think every place has room for small improvements. But I could not find any today. Just returned from Breakfast. I had the Macadamia nut covered Banana Pancakes with REAL Maple Syrup and a side of Patty Italian Sausage.Terriffic flavors. My companion had the Chilequiles and there were also very tasty, the ingredients very fresh. Staff was friendly and knew they had not seen our faces before. There were a few empty tables here that I dont understand when there are lines at places that fair much worse. young guy showed up for Lunch which they dont do on weekends, But they happliy accomodated him. I highly recommend this place.

We discovered Steve's after husband's eye surgery one morning. Loved the breakfast, keep going back and have added lunch. Melissa the "waitperson" at lunch time is outstanding!! All restaurants should have someone so efficient, kind, and always fun. Steve is one of the nicest young men in this town.
