Great but still working things out, 9/20/2009

I've eaten here a few times now and overall it's a positive experience. They have some really good signature dishes and some very good deals. My biggest complaint has more to do with the training that the employees receive, or lack thereof. They have always been very nice to me (not sure who some of the previous reviewers interacted with, sounds pretty bad though) and tried to get things right despite an apparent lack of familiarity with the register etc. You should definitely give it a try yourself!

Excellent food, disappointing service, 9/9/2009
Reviewer: Matt from Santa Barbara, CA
I have now eaten here twice, one of their Panini's, and a burger. The food is rather excellent, some of the best that I've had in IV. The burger was enormous, and even better than Silvergreens. But the food takes about 15 minutes to prepare, and there is no soda fountain, just canned soda. The cashier was not very friendly, and I think she is also the cook, so service can be slow. I haven't been there yet for breakfast, but the menu for it does look good.

OK food, but not worth the service., 9/4/2009

I love to try new restaurants and have tried many in IV and Santa Barbara. Fresh Start is by far the worst service I've ever received. First, while waiting for our food, other people's food came out to be served. Instead of notifying the customer, the woman behind the counter just let it sit there until the customer came in to look for it. And then proceeded to ask him to let a different party of customers know that their food was ready. Are customers paying to work? Our food took over half an hour to come out, and while mine was decent and edible, my friend's was uncooked. When my friend hesitantly complained, the woman rolled her eyes, asked my friend what she wanted her to do about it, insulted the UCSB undergraduate employees, and accused my friend for her raw food. "Next time, if you want your food cooked, you should ask when you order it!" was the reply. When did we have to ask a restaurant to COOK food? I didn't even deal with this woman, and I left infuriated. The food isn't worth the attitude.

Worst customer service EVER, 9/1/2009

This is by far the worst restaurant I've ever encountered. I ordered a cheeseburger combo. The cheeseburger was not cooked thoroughly, so the middle was completely raw. When I told told person behind the counter about it (who I presume is the owner), she was argumentative and blamed me for not ordering an overcooked burger. Raw is raw. Rather than being concerned about righting and wrong and making the customer happy, she proceeded to argue and mouth off to me. She did give me a refund, however, along with 10 mins of lip service. Had the burger been cooked, it would have been great, and had this situation been handled professionally, this review would have been much more positive.

Disappointment - worst place i've eaten in a while...., 8/9/2009

I usually don't write bad reviews, especially when the establishment "fronts" that it's a healthy "fresh start" kind of place. Don't be fooled by the name, also, don't be fooled by ordering a side order of fries for $2.75. If you do want to be fooled by what they call a side order of fries, then expect to get about half the amount of a small order of fries from ANY other establishment that purports to have fries. Plus, why would a place called "fresh start" fry up a SMALL SMALL order of frozen french fries. My feeling is that this place won't last past a few more months. To their credit, I didn't try the crepes..... The fries and burger I would NEVER get again, try it and see for yourself if you're curious.

Amazing quality. Amazing service. Many people don't know this, but they have a DINNER menu. Some pasta and a GREAT HUGE HAMBURGER. This thing is HUGE and it comes with HOMEMADE meat. let me repeat, a patty that is homemade, and puts every other burger in town to shame. And it has top quality buns which still have some flour left on them (that is how you know this stuff has quality ingredients). Overall Service is great. It has some serious stereo system with CHILL music. You NEED to go there and try it out. I can't believe people fork over more money to eat crap at other places.

Really Good Food and Service, 2/20/2009

Nice place. The music can pump out a lot but they turned it down for us. Really good assortment of stuff and really fresh ingredients. A little pricey but the food size is very big. Limited Beverage options, try Blenders next door for your drink. In/out seating. Went for lunch.

Good Food, Disappointing Service, 2/16/2009

I have visited Fresh Start several different times. The first time I went with my boyfriend and we enjoyed the savory and sweet crepes. The service was good that time. After that, it has gone downhill. I went in to get a to-go order, and waited about 30 minutes. When I finally got my food and had arrived home, I realized that the girl working there had switched my food with another to-go order. That was all right, I was still willing to support this delicious crepe place and go back again. I went with my friends on a busy Sunday, and the people working there seemed to know little about the restaurant. The girl at the counter told my friends they could not give us free water in cups, and we then pointed to the water pitcher sitting on the counter with mint leaves floating in it. She seemed unaware that the pitcher even existed, and that customers were allowed free water. We waited a long time for our food, and it arrived cold. The next time I went, on a less busy morning, it was the same story with poor service and cold food. I really hoped that Fresh Start would provide good service that matched its great food. Sadly, I've given up and haven't been back since.

Most Wonderful IV Experience, 8/17/2008

The environment is very kitsch, created by art students at UCSB. The owners are very kind and open to any kind of suggestion and the FOOD is mindblowing, satisfying, tasty, wonderful, crave-worthy, and affordable. I highly recommend this place for anyone looking for a great space to enjoy a light and happy meal. Support a local business that supports creating a space for artists and supports the local food economy.
