You gotta try the tortas!, 8/15/2014
Reviewer: Amy from Carpinteria, CA
First, a disclaimer - out of the 10 times I've probably eaten here, I've only ventured to try the tortas. I've barely looked at the rest of the menu, it's just the go-to food here. Fresh bread, tender meat, and interesting tastes. I recommend the Cubano. Service is friendly, the gentlemen seem like they enjoy their job and just go about it kind of quietly and under the radar while somehow being very attentive. Prices are very reasonable, but note that a drink refill might cost extra. So take it easy with your soda as you feast on the chips and salsa they bring out when you sit down! My biggest secret to reveal - you have to order the flan. I'm normally too full to eat it after a torta, so I order it to go. They have it all packed up in the bakery display case near the front door. Just be cautious on your ride home - all those flan juices can leak (I speak from experience!).

Four months ago my family and I discovered Los Taracos in Goleta, and we have been there nearly 20 times since. Now it is by far our #1 choice for eating Mexican food here in SB/Goleta and I have lived here for almost 30 years. The food is amazing and you can get an inexpensive meal with outstanding food quality every time. Last Friday I had the Shrimp Enchiladas and the creamy tomatillo sauce on it was the best ever. I am still thinking about how good it was. Each dish is made fresh to order and the recipes come from the southern part of Mexico. Aminada, the name of the owner, is always there to serve and is one of the nicest people I have met. Los Taracos is excellent and we can't wait to go back.

I used to love this place but I haven't come for a couple months until today and I was disappointed. I asked the waiter what was on the La Tarasca torta and he said, "Everything." I asked what everything was and he said, "Uh, salchicha, tritip, uh, chicken, you know, everything..." Uh, no I DON'T know. I ordered a carnitas torta. It wasn't bad but there was a big blob of fat in one part. The thing that really bugged me is that my cup had a crack in it that made it look like a bug on the sided and my plate was all chipped around the edges. This looks really bad. I hope the pick it back up to the way they were before but I won't be back for awhile.

Worth a second visit, 1/25/2012

This was a first time for me and my friend. The special chicken flauta was very good as was the salsa. The server did not appear to know the menu well because he didn't know that there was a choice of sides for the meat entrees. The carnitas were bland and dry, and no sauce on the enchilada. About 15 mins. after we had ordered, the server asked us if our food had been brought to us...hmmm. There was a large group that was VERY loud. They were having a good time, but it would have been a courtesy to the other diners if the server would have asked them to hold it down a bit. We will try some other items next visit.

This place really is a hidden gem, if you don't really know about it you would probably never give it a chance. I'm here to tell you, PLEASE give it a chance. Go for the Torta, stay for everything else!

Delicious Torta!!!!!!!!, 12/28/2011

I've been to Los Tarrascos twice so far & both times I have been pleasantly surprised. The food is flavorful & the prices are very reasonable. The service is also good & the place is clean. I recommend the milanesa torta. DELICIOUS!!! It's a panini-style torta, not over-barring & VERY tasty. My mouth is watering just thinking about it. I hope this restaurant sticks around for many years.

Great Find!, 9/14/2011

My co-worker told me about the $1.25 tacos so I had to give it a try. I've been there twice this week! The first time I ordered 4 tacos (chicken, asada, lengua, and carnitas) and they were all delicious. And today I went back and tried a Tinga tostada and a chile! They were both delicious and decently priced. Not only that, I found the staff to be very nice and attentive. Think I found my new favorite Mexican place here in Goleta.

I love this place! It's been here for years but I've never known about it until recently. Now that I know about it I can't stop going - it's absolutely delicious. I definitely recommend this to anyone looking for good Mexican food.

Great food but the waiter is a bit of a D, 7/27/2011

I go here quite frequently and try out everything on the menu because the food is very very good. They used to have a woman waiter who was very nice, but sometime ago she left and got replaced by "tattoo neck guy". The guy doesn't listen to orders (messed mine up 2 times in the last 2 months) and oogles any decently attractive woman who comes in and completely forgets about his table and service. The food is great, and the original guy who I believe to be the manager is always there as well as kind and friendly. Since they've hired this "tattoo neck guy", I don't come back nearly as much anymore because he won't bother filling my water, getting my check, or seeing if we need chips and salsa or napkins. Kind of a shame really, because I used to really enjoy this place.

Yay for another great Mexican restaurant in Goleta! This and La Carreta are truly authentic Mexican cuisine. Inside is well decorated, clean, and cheerful. Attention to detail is found throughout the space. I'm not sure if the previous reviewer was referring to dinner prices, but lunch is cheap. I had the torta which comes with a side salad for $6.50. Added a side of rice n beans for a bill around $10. Check comes with a complimentary cookie :) The torta was one of the best I've had in town - almost panini style the way the bread is grilled/toasted. Filled with marinated carne asada, avocado, onions, tomatoes, cilantro, lettuce and the yum. When ordering our waiter made sure to go over exactly what was inside so you know what you're getting and can modify if needed. My bf had the chicken burrito that I sampled - grilled chicken was great. Strawberry smoothie, also good. Huge selection of fresh fruit juices and smoothies. Diverse menu, cheap tacos. Please check this place out - say no to Taco Bell and support the locals!

I've eaten here twice, both times very satisfied. The tacos are my favorite at $1.25 each (I loved the adobada marinated pork). Chiles rellenos was amazing. Barbacoa plate was excellent too. I haven't seen that many customers in here...if you're looking for good Mexican in Goleta then try it out!! I'd love for them to stay in business.

This please has delicious tortas! I just had a carnitas torta from this place and it was amazing (take out, so no rating for service). I'm currently still on my lunch break and had to write a review of it because it was so good! the bread is so tasty and the meat was fantastic. I hear the carne asada torta is even better.

First time visitor was pleasantly surprised!, 4/21/2011
Reviewer: Kathy R. from Goleta, CA
This was my first visit to this little gem that I didn't even know was there -- and I pass by there nearly every day, but from the other direction! I had the Tres Amigos combination WITHOUT the rice & beans, choosing the chile relleno, chicken tamale and chicken enchilada. I LOVED the different sauces for each entree - tasty but not overpowering - and the plate presentation is something you rarely see in a Mexican restaurant! The owner, who is from the Michoacan region, was our server -- a very personable guy who took the time to answer our questions about the selections, commenting that they try very hard to prepare their food from authentic regional recipes. Definitely worth more than a single trip!

I was very impressed on how nice and clean the restaurant was. The service was excellent. I had the combination plate of beef enchilada, tamale and relleno. The relleno was excellent, but i found the tamale very dry. The beef enchilada was good, but needed alot more sauce on it(a bit dry). The salsa was bland, needs a little kick to it, but the guacamole dip was excellent and its presentation too. I find it good place to eat and will go there again.

Confusing menu - good food, 8/31/2010
Reviewer: LT from Santa Barbara, CA
We went there last night for the first time. I found their menu a bit confusing in that only tortas and salads were listed on the main menu (along with the various drinks and smoothies), and then a small breakfast/lunch/dinner flyer was tucked inside. On the flyer it had daily specials. We ordered the $4 burrito Daily Special, and were charged $6.50 each. They were good burritos, and they did not break the bank, but they could not really explain to me the discrepency. Lunch vs. dinner maybe?

Good food, but with an identity crisis., 8/26/2010

I have never been to their other location but was happy to see Los Tarascos in the Zodo's plaza. I was one of their early customers and continue to go there on occasion. I think they have a bit of an identity crisis and continue to be surprised each time I show up. They have strange torta and fruit smoothie combos. They also have a little display of Mexican breads that never looks fresh. Why is that even there? Recently, I went and noticed they were serving tacos. They have about six different flavors and the price is hard to beat ($1.25 /ea I think). The food is always tasty and feels like a cross between hole in the wall (El Sitio) and sit down (Del Valle Grill). I really like that they offer flavors you normally don't find in SB Mexican restaurants such as mole and al pastor.

Their Food Keeps Getting Better and Better, 8/25/2010

Luckily a co worker introduced me to this amazing, yet affordable, Mexican restaurant. Great location in Zodo's parking lot, they also have another one somewhere in Santa Barbara. The owners are personable and great! The other people that work there are surprisingly very friendly and sociable. The restaurant's upkeep and ambiance is immaculate; I don't have to worry about contaminated food, dirty hands, etc. My company uses them for catering on a monthly basis. Their tortas are phenomenal! Today I tried their soft tacos (carne asada), holy cow--I couldn't believe my taste buds! This place will definitely keep business with my company. They have a fan and loyal patron with me.

I work in Goleta so I have gone to almost every restaurant around here. But today, I made it to Los Tarascos. Firstable I was so impress about how clean the restaurant is. I was undecided what to order so I ordered a Licuado (like a milk shake but with fruits), I also order the Chef's Salad. I was so happy with the price and the high quality food. I guess I have found my new place for lunch.

Disappointing!, 10/27/2009

-Al pastor torta- I love al pastor! I'll judge a restaurant by its al pastor alone, and sadly, this place failed! Lets breeak it down - 1) The bread - "pinini style" I liked, it worked! 2)The avocado/onions/jalapeno/side salad - good and fresh! 3) The cheese - I would guess a low quality cheddar. 4) The meat/al pastor - very greasy, somewhat bland, and prolly the worst i'v had yet! Now, dont get me wrong, this place may have some potential. They have a few other meats, and they might all be great, but sadly i wont go back to try them. Conclusion - Order something other than al pastor, maybe the Carne Asada, tri tip or mole chicken. Also, I would have liked to see the option to order tacos as well, i mean they have all of the ingredients, all they need are some tortilla's.

Good Food and Service, 10/27/2009

Good food and Service. A little pricey but food is worth it. Also tried the torta "panini" (mole one) and it was really good. Their smoothies are good too. The "ratone" which is a word they coined themselves to describe their little cheesecake pastries are ok, a little too dry for me, kind of like a coffee cake. Plenty of indoor seating, kind of gets too hot inside though with a greenhouse effect in the afternoon. A much greater improvement over the Asian food place that used to be there!

After an 11 hour flight home, I was hungry for Mexican Food. Los Tarascos more than satisfied my craving. My husband and I couldn't decide on the variety of meats so we tried 3 tortas, the tri tip, mole chicken and another beef one (there were a lot more to select from) All three were delicious. It wasn't the traditional torta it was actually a panini torta. I can't wait to go back. Also we tried some filled pastries which were excellent. The crust was so soft and the filling not overly sweet. I'm definitely going back to try more items on the menu.
