I've eaten at Macs a total of 5 or 6 times spread over the years. It's been consistently good food and friendly service. I like the large, not overly breaded pieces of fish and don't find them any more greasy than one would expect from a battered, deep fried food item. I actually never found good F&C while traveling in London, glad we have some here in SB!

Fiesta. Late Evening. Greasy grease, tasteless food. I mention the time frame because perhaps it's relevant; however, I've eaten there twice before during the evening and found it to be the same dismal greasy tasteless offerings. Extremely dirty surroundings and the counter servers seemed bored, but friendly enough, at least to the unfortunate smelly homeless guy who was being sold two beers at the same time, no food, and sat down at a table to drink. The portion sizes are huge, expensive for what they are, but inedible as is, too greasy. Honestly, that was my last trip there until I hear it's been thoroughly cleaned and that the food is worth eating.

I'm an english exchange student at UCSB and went to the Mac's a few weeks ago and couldn't believe how good it was. Was honestly better than any fish and chips i'd had at home. The pies were incredible, especially the Tikka Massala one, and the curry sauce to go with the chips was great. Real good reminder of home. Also, run by a couple of English lads which gives it a nice authentic feel, real taste of home. - All i can add to this is to reiterate, best fish and chips i've ever had, even better than England

Our first visit about a year ago fell short, so we thought we would give Mac's another chance. The staff were nice, service was good, but the fish and chips were very oily and the chips seemed double-fried with an odd taste and a very strange, grey color. The place was busy, so they must be doing something right....just not for us, unfortunately.

We checked Mac's out shortly after they opened and it was awful. The batter on the fish was a soggy disgusting mess and the fries were even worse, just a pile of sopping pile of grease and potato. Well, we tried it again yesterday and they certainly have gotten their act together. Got served up a delicious cut of fish with the batter refined to the perfect crisp-ness. Fries were perfectly cooked. Redemption indeed! It's not the best fish & chips I've ever had by a long shot (a little place up in B.C. has that prize), but it was quick, relatively inexpensive, and pretty damn good. We'll go back.

Being an ex-pat, it's really hard to find authentic fish n chips. This place does not disappoint. Perfect batter and white flaky fish. The chips are also just right - perfect for a chip butty. We will be back.

Was in town from SF. Looked up 2012 best in Santa Barbara. Was looking forward to some great fish & chips, and clam chowder. What a disappointment! The clam chowder was not chowder. It was clam juice that had no clams! You could have watered your plants with it. When I called, it was explained to me that water is added to thin it out and because we ordered just before closing we must have gotten the bottom of the pot. Please don't waste your hard earned money. Save it and come visit SF for real food. Also the judges for 2012 SB best need to be "Chopped"!

My wife and I and our two sons were visiting the Santa Barbara area while checking out some collages for our oldest son. We tried Mac's Fish & Chip Shop specifically because of their appearance on DDD. We all loved the fish & chips! I wished we could have stayed in the area long enough to have tried more of the menu but we'll be back! Thanks for a great meal.

Hands down BEST fish and chips in SB. Owner really knows what he is doing, fish is always crispy with generous chips. Staff very friendly. The only criticism, if you even call it that, would be for the owner to change out the beer selection. Seems like the beers are owners favorites, but may be good to add a few local options too.

I just started my first year at UCSB, so naturally, I had to check out downtown, and was very happy to find Mac's. I grew up in Scotland, and until Mac's, I have been unable to find a place that reminds me so much of my childhood! The haggis is a wee bit different than what I'm used to, since it's battered, but it's delicious - I persuaded my friends to try it and they loved it, too. Also love that it comes in a "taster" size - the "wee haggis" - so people won't be too scared to give it a try. I've not tasted more "authentic" fish and chips anywhere else in the States. Might be a wee bit too greasy for some tastes, and the prices lean slightly to the more "expensive" side, but it's the best comfort food ever! Service is great, there's a very warm atmosphere - feels a lot like a chippie back in Scotland (never been to England so I can't comment on that) - and you typically don't have to wait too long, everyone working there has always been very friendly. And I know where I'll go this year to celebrate Burns Day! (:

Our family lived in England for three years in the early 1970's and really enjoyed the fish and chips from the many local fish and chip shops. We returned to the states in 1974 and haven't had an opportunity to experience fish and chips that compared with those we had enjoyed during our stay. While visiting our daughter here in in Santa Barbara we decided to give Mac's a go. Glad we did, it was a real treat. I think we just returned to England, if only for an hour. We will be sure to visit again. Jolly Good!!!!!

The fish was really amazing here as was the Mushy Peas. Fries(chips) were so so. Kind of disappointed that they don't have a soda fountain. They do have some english soda in cans. A bit pricey but the food quality and that you are in the lower state tourist area warrant it.

We just heard about this place from some friends and went to check it out last week. I've been to England many times and love Ennglish style fish and chips. Most places that serve it here in the States are simply disappointing. Not Mac's, very authentic and very good. The Queen would be pleased.

This is the real deal. We have been to pubs in England and had great fish & chips. The is like it is in the "old country." It's a cheery place run by a lovely couple. Try the cole slaw or mushy peas...instant comfort food! We had a blast here the day of the royal wedding. It was THE place to be to celebrate and watch the wedding on the telly.

This was my second time visiting. The first time, the batter was way different, a bit thin, crispy but not really light and crispy, more dense. This time, WOW, one of the best battered fish I've ever had, simply fantastic! Light and crispy batter, moist fish, everything really flavorful. The fries are okay, not crispy but nice and thick but I suppose I could have asked for crispy fries. The service was very attentive also.

I ate at Mac's yesterday for the third time, and have found that a)I enjoy their fish more when it is fried for a little less time than is standard so the crust is not so, well... crusty, b)I like the chips (fries) a little more well-done so they are crispy on the outside, and c) they are very accommodating about such requests. I made one more pleasing discovery: they are now serving their "lunch-sized" portion all day. It is the perfect amount for me, and I'm glad I don't have to spend more on a larger portion when I go in the evening and let some go to waste. Because fried food just doesn't keep as leftovers, ya know? Anyway, I love Mac's even more in light of these discoveries. As I was walking out, someone on the street said, "Well, you look chipper!" I told them it was because I had just had some great fish & chips =)

Well at least the best that I have tried in my 40 something years in the US. When I go back to England fish and chips are a must because I could not get good ones here, that has all changed now. If I want a good dish of Fish and Chips I shall go to Mac's it is the best. I have not made their first Sunday yet when they make a real Sunday meal, maybe the month of February I can do that I hope, that is the next adventure I am looking forward to. Keep up the good work

Whatever they do to the mushy peas here has earned a place near the top of my comfort food staples. Something to always keep stocked in the freezer for a quick microwave heat up. So sure, stop for the perfectly fine fish, chips, pies and deep-fried candy bars but don't leave without a few cartons of the mushy peas to take home too. Thank you Mac, for bringing this previously unappreciated item to Santa Barbara.

I really really enjoyed this place. I've never had "real" fish and chips as many people describe them, so I can't honestly compare it to English style fish and chips. What I can say, however, is that everything was simply delicious! I went with a friend about a month ago and am dying to go back. We got a large selection of food so we could try lots of things... truthfully, I don't recommend doing this with only 2 people. Everything was so good, I just kept eating no matter how full I was! We had the lunch sized fish & chips (which was still very large and THE BEST I've ever had!), a side of mushy peas (which I loved), a side of gravy (it was a tasty gravy, but nothing to write home about), Haggis (yes, I tried it... honestly, I wouldn't eat it again, but I love that it's on the menu for those who like the traditional dish), and a scotch egg w/ the house brown sauce on it (AH-MA-ZING!!!! I've never even heard of it before, but I swear, I will have dreams about this delicious concoction for the rest of my life!) Oh, and the service was wonderful. The 2 men behind the counter were really friendly, but not intrusively so, and seemed to have just as much fun with our order as we did. Please Santa Barbarians, go here! Keep places like this around!!!

This past Sat for lunch the husband and I returned to Mac's. This time he had fish n chips again but I had Shepherd's pie with a side of mushy peas. We both had Boddington's. The "tweaks" I appreciated this visit are: real glasses for the beer (not plastic cups); the chips were "drier" instead of greasy (1st visit experience); we can bus our own tables now; and being told our order would be "made to order" and would take a few minutes to cook. I couldn't finish my pie (too rich) but the flavors were wonderful. The chips being not sloppy-greasy were good, and I love their tartar sauce! (I sneaked a couple of bites of hubby's fish). Now there are signs about where to leave trash so we can bus our own tables, and I saw a worker cleaning tables. When we first visited after they opened, we encountered many "dirty" tables. The cleanliness this time was appreciated!

Finally tried Mac's and it surely did not disappoint. The fish, chips and mushy peas (it helped that the menu described this side as "like a very thick split pea soup" because I was having a hard time visualizing what that would be!) were delicious. I especially enjoyed the chips--crispy on the edges and soft inside, with lots of malt vinegar. Wonderful! The draft beer selection wasn't to my taste, but I can't fault them for that. I was pleasantly surprised that there is a fireplace in the dining area! Mac and the young woman server were both very friendly and helpful. The regular-sized portion was plenty for two, but we didn't realize this until each ordering our own. Taking leftovers home didn't seem feasible since I didn't think fried food would keep well for later. I forged ahead and kept eating since it was so good, but my friend wisely bagged up her leftovers and put them outside for someone hungry to find. Next time I will split it!

I think the problem with some reviewers here is that they simply don't understand the concept of what Mac's is trying to bring to SB. And that is real, glorious fish and chips, UK style. My Scottish husband and I LOVE Mac's and think it's a great addition to downtown. I can't believe nobody else (including us, darn it!) didn't think of it before now. I can only say that the way they make the fish and fries is EXACTLY why we love it. It's authentic and a lot of people are used to a different type of food. It's like ordering a taco or burrito in Mexico or sushi in Japan. It's a whole different type of food when it comes down to it. So, flaky fish with squishy fries? Bring it on. People, that's how it's SUPPOSED to be!

We travelled a long way to try out Mac's. It certainly did not disappoint. We are from Essex in England and can vouch that this is english fish and chips at its best. The fish was just as we would have expected and the chips were great too. After travelling 3,600 miles in the US, we were ready for some english food. We were made to feel extremely welcome by Kate and Grant. When we return to Santa Barbara, a visit to Mac's will be our priority. Well done to you both, and long may you continue!!

For all those negative reviewers talking about the food, you just don't know what true English fish & chips are. This place rocks! and its about time a true fried fish joint opened in this town. The fries seemed to have been sitting around for awhile. I would have preferred a couple of smaller pieces of fish, instead of one giant one. The malt vinegar seemed diluted to me, but maybe it was just my taster. Mac's opened for business while I was in the UK. I returned with fresh memories of late night chips, haddock and battered sausages drizzled with malt vinegar and a dunking of brown sauce. And I headed over to Mac's to give this chippie a try.

The chips were good as any I'd had across the pond. I hold up photos up each, side by side, and cannot tell the difference. They're such a comfort food, I get the warm fuzzies and watering mouth at the thought of them.

My regular fillet order of Alaskan cod was a hefty portion, perfectly fried, spanning the basket of chips and mushy peas.

The deep fried Mars bar, more a Scottish specialty, was gooey, chewy and delicious. I should have had an Irn-Bru with it, maybe next time.

Price: $15 after tax. That's about 10 quid, on par with ordering the same in the U.K. Less over here, if you consider that most chippies charge 20p per packet of ketchup or brown sauce.

Start making kebabs and this would be the quintessential late night pitstop for a weekend piss-up. But don't, because it's good just as it is.

Love the fact that the sausagemeat comes from Whitefoot - locals supporting locals. And love the fact that the packaging is recycleable or biodegradable - I just leave the containers at the side counter and it gets sorted into the appropriate bins for me. TA!

SMALL?? I could barely finish it by breaking the fish down and taking a few deep breaths! Compare to the prices at old Lettuce B Franks or surrounding establishments? Or maybe you got an off portion... definitely try them again, or order the 'whale' and split it (who needs a whole mac's portion of fries, whew!)? Try the bangers and mash while you're at it; it's a private recipe made just for them by a local butcher (Whitefoot, I think?). Sorry, just obsessed.

Stopped here during 4th of July. Was not too busy at the time but it sure took a while for my single order of fish and chips to go to be ready. Anyway, not a big deal. Except for the size, I thought the fish and the batter was perfect. And I loved the "chips". A little salt and some malt vinegar and it was all good. That said, I was surprised that my regular order of fish and chips for $10 included just one small piece of fish. The batter was substantial but if you take that way, the fish itself is rather meager (maybe 6ounces?). They also forgot my mushy peas. If portion size stays the same, I am unlikely to return.

Hands down the best fish & chips I have ever had. Served with a side of mushy peas, and I was on cloud nine. Those of you that think it is too greasy, must have forgotten to put malt vinegar on your fish. It is what gives the balance to the deep fried fish. The service was also very friendly. The owners seem genuine and care about the quality of the product they are selling. The Brittish just need to learn that it is okay to serve fresh brewed tea over ice :)

Who would have guessed the mushy peas will bring me back even more than the crispy, crunchy light-battered fish. First I thought one order of mushy peas would be good enough for two, now that I am still eating my way through my take home leftovers this is one of those items that gets even better a few days later.

Don't know what is in Mac's mushy peas besides peas that have been mushed up but this is an item to pick up on its own merit. Now if they can get the chips not to be so soggy (flavorful as they are) they will have hit a home run, if you can use that baseball analogy for a British chip shop. Lively spot with lots to like about this menu and prices. Very helpful staff that seem happy with their customers and proud of their product.

Best of all open to 2am on weekends when that fish and chip hankering can be likely to strike. Or when nothing other than some comfy mushy peas will do to send you off to happy dreamland. But be sure to save some for the next few days too.

I was keen to try Mac's since I've just returned from the UK. I was disappointed to find the fish tough with a soggy coating and the chips bland and limp. The mushy peas were great, and I enjoyed the ale on tap. It seemed odd to me there were only 2 beer choices, only one on tap. The service was friendly and enthusiastic but could not make up for the food quality. I also thought the price was high for what we got. I SO want this place to succeed and I hope the problems can be fixed.

I so wanted to love this place.... well, can't say I'll be going back. I ordered fish & chips and found the fish to be too heavy and greasy to finish. I waited in line for quite some time. I purchased a regular fish sandwich and chips and waited again. I placed my order to go since the place was completely packed. I started to eat the sandwich and noticed it was pretty greasy, but it was absolutely delicious so I kept eating. Toward the end it started to be so greasy I couldn't even finish eating it. Not to mention my chips started to have a strong taste of vinegar. I ended up throwing the last of my food away. Now I love fried food, in fact I own a deep fat fryer, so I am not just being picky. If they can find a way to make the food less greasy and less tasting of vinegar I will be a huge fan. I loved the chips though.

Got the fish and chips with mushy peas and i toooootally intend to go back again and again and try EVERYTHING. The fries weren't completely crispy and the (delicious wonderful) batter came off the (huge delicious and perfect) cod when i cut into it... but i think next time instead of just putting it back together i'll just spoon the (orgasmic) mushy peas into the breading and eat that. I'm in love.

I went in today for lunch & had the fish & chips with Mushy Peas. It was really good! The portion was big enough to share. I can't wait to try the battered pickles or the curry sauce. I'm excited that there is a place on State St to grab a bite after a night out. This place is great & I would love to see a good kebab on the menu!

I already wrote a review for this restaurant, and pointed out that while there were some kinks in the food preparation (with tough batter on the fish and the oil not hot enough to fry crispy), I guessed they would be fixed. I went back today, and it was perfect. Great fish and chips, great service, great idea.

YES... Authentic....YES.. As a brit myself, I am always looking for a little bit of home, and I found it, and I was crazy exited... I went in there wondering and a little doubtful that it was Authentic, but I am happy to say it is fantastic. Battered Sausage, Large Fish, Heinz Baked Beans and British Owners. Perfection. I have been to loads of "authentic chip shops" and believe me they are not, but Mac & Kate they got it going on, they know how to roll (sausage roll) You gotta go and eat. Proper fish, lovely chips and a great atmosphere. ENJOY, I know I will...

This place is fantastic!! I would highly recommend it to anyone thatís looking for fresh, great tasting food, thatís reasonably priced and comes with a side of friendly service. I was so impressed the first time I went there; I actually visited the place again the next day. Due to my numerous visits, I have had the opportunity to taste a few of their menu items and they were all outstanding. Iím partial to the Fish & Chips but the Savory Pies are amazing. This place is definitely worth a visitÖ.or two

I had heard that an authentic "chippy" had just opened on State St. Being from England and not having any decent fish and chips here since 1983 has been difficult to say the least! I was eager to try it. The owner Mac a real friendly northern lad served me up fish, chips,mushy peas and a side of curry sauce to top it off (with lots of salt and vinegar) I was literally salivating on the counter! It's the real deal!!! and I'm a fish and chip expert! So delicious I almost cried!! Thank you Mac and his wife... now my life is complete!

I was surprised at the generous portion of fish and it was very tasty. The tartar sauce tasted homemade too. Even one of the people I was with who doesn't like fish really enjoyed her fish n'chips. Then the deep fried candy bars - wow! Get it with the homemade chantilly creme. Wow, so good and no fishy taste at all. They must use a separate fryer for their dessert dishes. Then they have cool and interesting sodas from Britain. And last but not least, great service and friendly people.

A long thick piece of fresh and tasty cod, lightly battered and fried to a pleasant crispy crunch, on a large round bun with a light sprinkling of fresh shredded iceberg lettuce and tartar sauce for great flavor - enough for "glue" to hold it all together without being gloppy. Only thing I'd change is using an oblong bun instead of round. I highly enjoyed this sandwich. The chips are "authentic" which means thick and heavy, not crispy, and slightly wet. Not how I like my fries but this will not deter me from returning to try more and different dishes. Service I rated lower only because on a busy Friday dinner hour no one was bussing tables and there are no trash cans for customers to do it themselves. I believe the no-can-policy is because the proprietors are composting everything - which is a wonderful idea but dirty tables aren't pleasant to eat from. I will definitely be back.

Arrived on the second night of the opening of this great spot to find a great menu and a very clean operation. Canola oil deep fried Cod and great selection of meats and cold beer & ale. Met the owners who were watching over a friendly staff (he even bought me a lager). Generous portions and a killer cole slaw.

I am so glad this place has opened. It's a great concept, the ingredients are fresh and good quality, and I am definitely going to be a regular. We went on the first day and it was busy, but the owners were involved in each order and the service was great. The only reason the food didn't get five stars is because I don't think the oil was hot enough when we were there. Batter on fish needs really hot oil to keep it crisp and light; when you are feeding a crowd and have a long line out the door, it's hard to do this but I have the feeling these folks will have nailed it by the time I go back.

Since they've opened I've eaten here twice with different people. No matter what's been ordered, I have yet to see anyone be disappointed. The people here are great, too! A very friendly staff. The lamb shepherd's pie is deliciously flavorful - I'm not even a fan of lamb! The breading (on both the fish & the gherkin) is flaky and not too heavy, the baked beans were excellent, and the fried candy bar makes for a sinful finish (we tried the peanut butter cup) - make sure you get it 'with love!' The only negative thing I can say is that the chips (fries) are a tad on the plain side (however, thick and potato-ey)...but with a little ketchup or a dip in the beans, it's all gravy, baby!
