Legendary Pizza - LET'S GET IT BACK!, 9/8/2015
Reviewer: John from Leavenworth, KS
The best pizza ever made. Went with my friends in high school every week back in the '70's. We'd hit Deano's every Saturday night before cruising Upper State. Years later took my future wife every Sunday afternoon. There was no place like Deano's. The pizza was terrific. When I was assigned to Louisiana in the Army I discovered the original Deano's was in Lafayette. Comments about bad service are nonsense--there were definitely some eccentric workers but they were fun. The most eccentric as the old lady who was the cashier. She was the owner's mother. The second owner tried to keep as much of the original as possible. (The mother was long gone by the '90's.) I'll absolutely support a kickstart campaign. I've been all over the world and never found pizza this good. Return to SB at least twice a year and miss Deano's terribly.

Best Place ever... Pizza Legends, 8/25/2015
Reviewer: John Ziegler from Santa Barbara, CA
This was my hang out, this was the place. My Brother Rudi was and is still a Deanos Legend. I hope to see it reopen in the near future, I know that Santa Barbara needs this place to reopen. Maybe we need to start a kickstarter campaign to get it to that point. Lets get Deanos back on the map. I noticed a few Troop 15 comments below, this was also the place where we would meet before we started any trip. This place meant so much to so so many people, it should be considered a historical icon for Santa Barbara. Long live deanos pizza!

I remember eating here all the time as a kid. Dean-o's sponsored the women's softball team that my Uncle Eddie coached and my mom and aunt played on. Back in the 70's. Very fond memories of great food and fantastic times. Too bad it's no longer around......

Still trying to find a pizza like Deano's, 4/10/2013
Reviewer: Gary from Eastsound WA
I grew up on the mesa during the 60s and Deano's holds so many key memories for me. Not only have I never found a pizza that tasted quite as good in the intervening years, I haven't even gotten close! I recently was on google earth and my heart skipped a beat when I went to street level and saw the familiar sign...but alas, that picture was taken a few years back..and now I hear Deano's is gone. I am crushed as that was the first place I planned to visit on a future trip to SB. I heard "Strawberry Fields" by The Beatles for the first time on Deano's juke many memories.

I worked at Dean-o's in the mid 60's with Charlie Guerrero when he was going to Brooks. Lots of late nights there, mucho beer and pizzas down the hatch. The rugby/soccer clubs used to come and drink Watneys after their matches which got me to be a Watneys fan! Atmosphere was always exciting, fast paced but so much fun. Met a lot of good people there. Sorry to see it has gone but boy did it give me some good memories while going to City College! Loved it.

I grew up in SB, and Dino's was the best place. I'm planning a trip to SB soon (live in Hawaii now) and Dino's was on my list. My favorite was beef and onion. I know that sounds strange and I can't find it at any pizza joint. I don't know why they closed but I'm angry at someone. In the same way music now is all digital (everything sounds the same), I fear our "home grown" businesses that provided uniqueness are a thing of the past. I feel sorry for the kids and teens these days.

I am now sad, 5/13/2010
Reviewer: Patty Graves from Golden, CO
My cousins, Jan & Don Moraga, owned DEANO's after Don's dad turned it over to him (Don). I live in Colorado and when we went to visit my aunt Jean (Jan's mom) the mission, the pier and the pizza parlour were ALWAYS on our list of things to see and do. I still remember the taste and smells of the parlour. So sad for Santa Barbara to have a wonderful local place disappear. I am so disappointed with all the chains, it's like you never leave your own city! Maybe it will reopen????

End of an era :(, 1/21/2010

What a bummer. This place had the best pizza in town and was a true Mesa landmark. Cheers and a sad farewell to Rudy and the rest of the staff! I wish there was a way to bring it back.

BEST pizza ever, 1/17/2010
Reviewer: Sierra from Santa Barbara, CA
I LOVE DEANOS. It is the best atmosphere. Will be ridiculously missed. Their incredible perfectly crisp crust and gooey delicous top can never go wrong. And for the people who complain about the wait. They do make it from scratch right there. If you look at them they are not standing around looking at eachother they re all doing something!! So sad to see SB be chipped away one good business at a time. You'll be missed.

Yes the employees may not be all chipper, yes the pizza takes longer than the others.... but you dont have DEANOS PIZZA just to have pizza.. You go to have DEANOS PIZZA for the enjoyment of the moment. Your vist to DEANOS starts when you enter the building... the smell is in the wood. I hope that DEANOS reopens even if it is just to pick up- take out!!!! or better yet also take and bake!!!! Im So sad to see a place that when i was a little girl use to go there and now 40 years later am taking my son who is 3 and this is the only pizza he will eat. Bye Bye DEANOS... You will be missed... Please reopen soon!

This place is consistantly good. We go for a glass of wine & great pizza & are never disappointed. I wonder if there was a loser employee at one time because I have always had friendly efficient service. Anyway, I recommend Deano's BIG TIME!

Deano's Rocks!!!!, 1/7/2010
Reviewer: Katelin Curtis from Santa Barbara, CA
I come up here to visit my sister sometimes and they almost always take me to Deano's for lunch or dinner and i love it every time! The food is great, the service is great, the atmosphere is great! It has the great old shool pizza joint feel to it and i am always more than satisfied! All the people are saying 'oh is one time they were really rude, oh this one time the food was really slow'. Yeah, like you would be all cheery if you had to work in a hot kitchen for 6 hours EVERY DAY! Abd they MAKE the pizza from scratch that's why it takes so long, that is called HARD WORK! Deano's is awesome and it should stay in business forever so everyone can see how great it is.

Reviewer: BFK from Santa Barbara, CA
I am sorry, to tell you that your service is not that great. My wife and I had pizza this evening it was slow. We order take out around like 5:45 and the pizza did not come out until like 6:15 maybe they were just slow. The Pizza was really good however,I felt like they could have added a little more Sausage and more Onions. I do not like being negative I just want to let the public know what I think of this restaurant, I have been a manager in the restaurant business in high school. Yes, I know the restaurant business is a very difficult business to being in you have a lot of responsibilities. As of my graduation I do not work in the restaurant industry but I like to give tough critics about certain restaurants that I feel could use improvements.

As a local business owner: BEST PIZZA & GREAT SERVICE, 9/6/2009
Reviewer: Victor from Santa Barbara, CA
As a local business owner I question the reviews that state rude service and do not give any details. I have always received great service from Rudy and others over the years. Deano's pizza is excellant, period. I have ordered dozens and dozens and dozens of pizzas for my employees & myself over the last 10 years. My staff and myself have been recommending Deano's to our accommodation guests for over 10 years. Guest comments are always positive and they inform us they will visit Deanno's again on their next visit to SB. If service is rude or unacceptable, its only fair for the customer to bring this up with the owner or management before posting these type of reviews. Give business a chance to remedy if actually true. If the food is bad take it back and ask for a refund ! They offer great specials thru the Santa Barbara discount book which our business is listed in also. Hats off to DEAN-O'S PIZZARAMA!!

It's an old school Pizza Parlor, not fine dining!, 8/16/2009
Reviewer: Nick from Santa Barbara, CA
Deano's is hands down my favorite pizza in SB! The crust is really like no other, crispy bottom with a fluffy top and delicious. For the people complaining about the service......its's a pizza parlor not fine dining. If you want to be waited on, go to a full service restaurant. How much service do you need? Order your Pizza, get your drinks, sit down and wait for them to call your number. Now if you excuse me I need to go pick up my Large Pep and Pineapple. Learn about it!!!!!! SBL

Good Food and Service, different kind of pizza, 8/14/2009
Reviewer: Glenn from Buellton
The pizza here looks like Giovanni's type on inspection but the crust was very different, kind of cardboard crisp feel to it. I did not much appreciate it though as refrigerator pizza the next day it had softened up and was really good. The service was good(maybe they listened to previous reviewers) both the order taker and the drink(mini bar server) were very cordial. Apparently the oldest pizza place in Santa Barbara, they also advertise as "voted best in SB" but not sure which poll that is from.

Employees have kept me away., 6/22/2009
Reviewer: Colleen from Santa Barbara, CA
I wholeheartedly agree with all of the previous reviewers who referenced poor service at Dean-o’s Pizzarama. I moved up to the Mesa a year and a half ago and as a new resident I was committed to patronizing the local businesses/restaurants. Well unfortunately I could not honor that commitment as far as Dean-o’s was concerned. The first time I went there I received unfriendly service from both the cashier and the bartender respectively. I thought it was just a fluke or an “off day” so I went back for a return visit a couple weeks later since the pizza was okay. But again, I got the same uninspired and borderline rude “service” (if you want to call it that). I guess temporary insanity must have gotten the better of me and I decided to give it one more try (my son likes their video games). Big mistake…I got more of the same lousy treatment. That was over a year ago and I have not returned to Dean-o’s since. But judging by the below reviews, it appears nothing has changed. It’s sad to say, but it is the one Mesa establishment that has lost my business forever.

Rude on phone, 6/18/2009
Reviewer: Tappet McGinley from Santa Barbara, CA
I called in to order 3 pizzas for the UFC 99 fight and the kid on the phone was one of the rudest people I have encountered in about a decade. Sure they may be busy and don't give a crap about my order but eventually if enough people are treated this way they may regret it and miss orders like mine.

Best pizza I have ever had

Great pizza. Questionable employees., 3/17/2009
Reviewer: Timothy from Santa Barbara, CA
I really like the place and eat there somewhat often with family. I love the pizza and rarely get one that doesnt taste how I would expect it. However, the employees are a joke and there's no excuse for it. Is there ever a manager or owner around? I understand there is a lot of downtime while making pizza but the staff seems off in their own world. Even a little bit of appreciation and attentivness to customers would make a huge difference. It becomes an unwelcoming place if the staff does not try.

Time to re-group guys, 8/20/2008

Is everybody working at this place high? Real lack of energy on both the food prep and the service. Soggy crust, weird taste to the tomato. This used to be my favorite place for pie, not any more after this visit.

Great Pizza...HORRIBLE service, 8/15/2008
Reviewer: Tom from Santa Barbara
Last night I took my girlfriend and kids to dinner at Dean-o's pizza. When I went to get our drinks, there was no one at the bar. The "bartender" was on a stool on the customer side, slouched on the bar, with his head in the corner. He had a blue rag on his head, with a baseball cap on top of that. He slouched out of his seat, got our drinks, and deposited them on his side of the bar. He appeared to not want to be there, not want to help us, and clearly didn't want a tip, despite the "Tips" pitcher on the bar. But the part that REALLY disgusted...was when he used the towel off his head to WIPE DOWN THE SALAD BAR. Dean-o's has GREAT pizza...but they SERIOUSLY need to find employees who are pleasant to customers, act like they want to be there, look and act professionally...and maintain a SANITARY workplace.

Almost always GREAT food AND service..., 6/28/2008
Reviewer: Kandis Davis from Santa Barbara, CA
I love this pizza joint! I love the guys that work there and the pizza is just my style. I had an unusual situation the last time I ate there and I contacted the "General Manager" via phone to explain the incident of my out of sorts pizza. Much to my surprise he did NOT greet me sympathetically... didn't even offer to replace my pie. I am disappointed in your choice of representation. Still going to eat the on the regular, hey like I said I love the place :)

I enjoy many styles and genres of pizza, so in that perspective, Deano's is TOPS for pizza making of the 70's & 80's generation. Anytime I crave that type of pizza, Deano's is coveted! I try to hit the spot every couple of weeks & love the ambiance of people throwing beers down at 11am watching sports. . the guys hustling in the back trying to keep the legacy alive! If you get that old school urge, Deano's delivers!

I'd give it a 5 star for pizza joint ambiance...but the food, 2/12/2008
Reviewer: Mike from Santa Barbara
Great old school pizza joint. Pies look nice but the crust needs some work. Never serve a pie that comes out soggy...makes what could have been a good pizza - bad.

Reviewer: Barbara from Santa Barbara
Quite simply, Deano's is the best pizza in Santa Barbara. I crave it regularly. I love the sauce, the cheese, the flavor. I LOVE that they haven't changed the atmosphere, it evokes years of family history. And it's one of the few places in town with a real pinball game. As a native Californian, I think the Chicago reviewer should go back to the mid-west and stay there. There's too many people in Ca anyway. GO HOME and eat your own yucky pizza and we'll keep loving Deano's for another 40 years. Deano's ROCKS!

Go back to Chicago!, 9/16/2007
Reviewer: Evan Smith from Santa Barbara/CA
To the person from Chicago who claims that Deanos is the worst Pizza among many bad pizza joints here in S.B.! Go back to Chicago! What kind of pizza do you like? Deep dish? You call that pizza?! Deanos is closer to authentic thin crust pizza from Italy than your "Not Delivery, It's DiGiorno,Stauffer's frozen pizza stunt double, too much butter in the crust, tastes like a warm cheese sandwich crap you got back there in the midwest". Nobody invited you anyhow! Go home!

Pleasurable Pizza Pie, 9/2/2007

I'm pretty sure that pizza is what I'm made of, as I eat pizza for every single meal and Dean-o's is some good pizza that doesn't make me feel too greasy and washes off easily in the shower and leaves me smelling like a nice friendly Itlian. I love it and desire to feel and smell this way often.

Best Pizza in Town. Comparing it to Little Caesar's is like comapring LA to SB. If you don't like Deanno's, turn around and head back out of town. Order the pizza well done with light sauce. Nothing else like it in town.

Not the best pizza, 7/12/2007
Reviewer: Aaron from Santa Barbara, CA
I previously lived about 5 minutes away from this place. I'm a pizza lover, but i don't love their pizza. I have been here once and i will not go back. The pizza is very bland, reminds me of Little Caesar's. The sauce is pretty tasteless and the dough is a bit chewy/gummy.

What's with the loud obnoxious music at night?, 6/29/2007
Reviewer: Manuel from Santa Barbara
I've been going to Deano's for years with my softball team. The pizza is very good and we always take advantage of the softball team pizza specials. It's agreat place to eat and drink after a softball game. Only complaint is that about 9:00 p.m. the workers start blasting heavy metal music head banging music that drowns out out our conversations. To the management, talk to your employees about the volume, its pretty obnoxious.

Anyone who thinks this is good pizza has never had a decent pie in their life. Terrible crust, bland sauce, and low quality cheese make this some of the lousier pizza in town(with plenty of competition for that title).

Reviewer: Jeannie from Santa Barbara, CA
The pizza is not that great, I was pretty disappointed. I tried it because it was rated #1. It's pretty mediocre and the crust is not flat or thick, so it's neither NY style or Chicago pan-pizza style. It's also very overpriced for what you get.

Reviewer: Bobbie Ann from Santa Barbara, CA
The pizza is totally yummy. I take all my friends from out of town to eat and now they beg me to take them to Deano's Pizzeria's. My favorite is the sauce (extra, please) and the crust. Everyone should come by once and I know they'll return for the food and the service. Come in and talk to the boss (Lou) or Rudy his associate, they will help you with any questions or concerns.

The Only Authentic Pizza Pie In Town + + + + +, 5/10/2006
Reviewer: Frank D Dato from Santa Barbara, CA
I have been patronizing Deano’s pizza since the early 80’s. There have been minimal changes in the décor. The jute box still rocks in the corner amongst the pinball and video games. All the same neon beer signs lightly illuminate the surrounding walls and some of the extra thick shellacked original tables still require a few folded napkins to keep them from rocking. The Pie is the I same recipe and the beer is always Ice Cold. Great family atmosphere. Deano’s still sports the original ovens and copper top beverage bar. Love this place. Regular stop for me, my family and friends. The Best by far. No other compares.

We have been looking for pizza like this for a long time! The Me N Ed's review convinced us to try it after we found out Rose Cafe was closed until 1/17. Had the "special" and it was. I could tell without opening the box. It smelled so good and was so heavy. It was completely loaded with toppings and the crust was absolutely perfect. Now we have our spot.

deanos , its me-n-eds ... which isnt a bad thing, 1/1/2006
Reviewer: mark from santabarbara, ca
i grew up in an area with alot of me-n-eds pizza parlors and really grew to love that style of pizze. the crust is so flakey and flavorful its as good as the pizza itself. also in the area i lived there was alot of portuguese, so linguica was a very common topping. ive lived in santa barbara for about 7 years ... and have missed both me-n-eds style of pizza and linguica as a topping. that was until i went to deanos for the first time. turns out deanos used to be a me-n-eds until 1965, and it seems they havent changed the pizza much since then (im sure deanos employees are grumbling as i write this) when i opened the pizza got i said to myself 'its me-n-eds!', now with deanos i can get that great me-n-eds style pizza (heck its probably a little better) whenever i want. a good round table, or california pizza kitchen will probably beat it out tastewise ... but those are gourmet style pizzas at gourmet prices. suprisingly its fairly similar to rustys pizza ... both are great pizzarias that put the modern fast food pizzas to shame.

Best Pizza in S.B!, 12/28/2005
Reviewer: Joe from Goleta
After reading the reviews on here, decided to give a few of the best a try. Deanos prevailed as the "best." Paesanos was also good, but the style of pizza at Deanos was just more my taste. Every pie I've gotten here has been cooked perfectly crispy but not overdone and never soggy. The texture and doness is the highlight of the pies here, the sauce is also good, only complaint was a few of the toppings were lacking in flavor, the canadian bacon was just salty with not enough smokiness. Overall great pizza and the staff is friendly and helpful. Highly recomended!

Great Pizza? or THE GREATEST PIZZA?, 11/10/2005
Reviewer: S. M. from San Francisco, CA
Ok, here's the deal. I lived in SB for 5 years and was a regular at Deanos for the last two (lived in IV for the first 3-I only discovered it when I moved downtown). Deanos is BY FAR the best pizza I have ever had. The sauce is fantastic (homemade), the crust is awesome (I like getting it well done/crispy), and the pizza as a whole is amazing. I moved to San Francisco recently and have tried in vain to find a pizza joint i can call home. No one can match Deanos, not even close. The guys behind the counter are real cool, the owner can be seen in there frequently and the atmosphere is like a REAL pizza parlor. Ok so I am venting but now you know this place is the real deal. Be thankful you live as close as you do (including Goleta). When I visit SB, Deanos will be the first stop. If you want the best pizza EVER (not that Rusty's crap), go to Deanos NOW! For me.

Best in California, 10/13/2005
Reviewer: Danny Bogart from CA
It has taken me 3 years to sample every Pizza parlor in Santa Barbara and neighboring communities. I do not hesitate to name 'Deanos' the very best I've ever SB or anywhere in California. Of course, I prefer a crisp, thin crust pizza as opposed to the other styles and if this is your preference as well you will be hard-pressed to find a better or equal pizza anywhere. Top quality toppings, incredible crust, a nice, loose atmosphere and friendly staff. Do yourself a favor and go to Deano's!

Reviewer: Big WEVS One from New York, NY
I went to Deano's for the first time about 25 years ago. As a child, I was amazed how generous they were with their toppings. They used to have a pizza called "the carnivore" and to this day I have never seen so much meat on a pizza. I live in NYC now and know what real pizza should taste like--thin and crispy crust, flavorful sauce, not too much cheese, you know the deal. That said, Deano's will always hold a fond place in my memory.

Have grown up with Deano's since High School (SBHS '67). No question, the best pizza in town, if not the state. Also, the coldest beer in town. Eat good!

I´m not even kidding. Plus, video games, pinball, and a big screen T.V. with your favorite sporting events. It was family owned and operated for 30 or so years, but the new owners are keeping it the same.

I currently live in Maryland but grew up in Santa Barbara. My family used to come to Deano´s once a week. The atmosphere is great if you like very casual pizza-place looks. The food is very good, but I haven´t been there in a while. I will return next time I´m in SB, though. There´s not much to say about the service, you order the pizza and pick it up from the counter when it´s done. Can´t get any easier than that!

The Best Pizza In SB - Wish they would open in Goleta too!, 4/28/2002

Deano´s by far is the best pizza in town. My friends and I are dreaming of the day that Deano´s will open in Goleta! I have been eating at Deano´s since I was in a high-chair! My parents would take us there every week. If you want the best of the best, go to Deano´s!
