For those who do not know yet- Kafana is long gone, and rumor is that enzo is now with the biltmore- biltmores gain, downtown dining's loss!

Wow! This is the only world-class food in the whole city..., 8/24/2006

Pardon while I digress, but having lived in Seattle, San Francisco, Napa, Los Angeles, San Diego and other great food cities, when I moved to Santa Barbara I hoped to find great cuisine. What a disappointment. From the lousy service here in town to the mediocre food just about everywhere, I had almost given up hope. Then came Kafana. I stopped in with my wife for a quick bite and discovered some of the finest med cuisine I had ever eaten. From the bread and olive oil, through the appetizer and entrees, I was heaven. Please, try this place right away, you will be rewarded with a meal that should rightfully take its place among the great places in America.

A bit salty, 8/4/2006

Good Mediterranean style cooking. Tried the Mahi mahi, veal scaloppini and the rigatoni carbonara. Food was a delight but the sauces in the fish and veal dishes were slightly over salted, which made them a bit of a chore to finish. Be sure to ask for less salt and eventually add yourself to taste.

not in America -- NOT, 8/2/2006

I've heard it's impossible to make a true carbonara in America --- well, this place does it, as they do with the Greek salad, the desert......nice quiet surroundings with friendly staff......goes right to my top 3 in town.......

Amazing restaurant, with excellent authentic Italian food done by the hands of an extraordinary midle eastern chef "Enzo"... Wish i had got the chance to congratulate him personally... Also the service is fascinating along with the beauty of the place itself... Thank you, will definitely come regularly...

Great Food and Great Service!, 4/26/2006

The menu was so full of interesting items that it was difficult to limit ourselves to just a few. I had the pasta carbonara. It was perfect. One friend had the fusilli with mushrooms, asparagus, and truffle oil. The other friend had eggplant Parmesan. Both were happy with their orders. The bread and herbed olive oil were delicious as well. And the service was friendly and attentive. We were there after 8:00 on a Wednesday and the restaurant wasn't packed like I heard it can be.

CALL FIRST, 4/19/2006
Reviewer: Kelrek from Goleta
Call before you go to make sure they do not have live music playing as the restaraunt is very small and gets very loud when people are playing music. When we were there people actually got up to dance and were flailing their arms in our faces. Food was good, but we were too distracted.

Excellently al dente!, 4/15/2006

The food was amazing, we all got pastas and the Turkish salad and my friend and I lived in Italy and were so impressed by chef Enzo's pasta at Kafana. We told the owner so, who happened to be eating next to us with his wife, and they were both lovely. The ambience is great, we dug the lighting and music but the food alone is worth a trip there. We should have tried the desserts!

Adventurous mix of Middle East and Italy, very friendly, 1/18/2006
Reviewer: Fab from Palo Alto, CA
I've eaten here on my own while in Santa Barbara on business. Adventurous mix of Middle East and Italy, though within each category most is fairly conventional: I had felafel and a wonderful salad for starters, and a very good pizza afterwards. They happily accomodated my request for a pizza that was not on the menu, though unfortunately had no salami (pepperoni) in stock. On a different note: Waitress was not only attentive (it's a small place), but so hot as to distract from the food. The owner, himself eating there with friends (I suppose), came over and said hello and asked whether all was ok. Very pleasant evening.

Wonderful food, great wine list, great friendly service, talented friendly chef, small and intimate with ethnic music that floats in and out. I go weekly, even if just for the wine and music. Try Tuesday nights for music.

A wonderful first experience, 10/25/2005

It was our first time there. Several people have recommended it to us. The food and service were wonderful. I was impressed with the wine list and happy with the ambiance, even sitting at the bar in this small space. The meal I had was great, the selections were broad enough for me to be happy with what turned out to be my second choice, the first was sold out by about 8:30 PM when we arrived. The meal my dining partner had was not what she ordered but she elected to not send it back. If I could give 4.5 stars I would have. We will be back.

Great place for wine and appetizers, 9/21/2005

Wonderful staff and atmosphere! Great music. The fritto misto appetizer and the bruscetta were wonderful, as well as the desserts. Great wine list. If you have a large party you should definitely get reservations, it's a tiny restaurant and even on weeknights they fill up fast.

wow!!!, 6/12/2005
The food here is good, too good. food should not be this good. (star with the crostino and then end with the frituro mista)

HIdden away and worth finding., 1/13/2005

Locals eat here because the food is fresh and great. Informal. Reasonable prices. They seem to have a relationship somehow with other very good Italian restaurants in town, trading staff, etc.

Nice and tiny!! Great place to eat!, 1/3/2003

Excellent Choice, and very cozy! Try the specials and enjoy sitting very close to your neighbors. It´s hard to find. Try sitting at the bar. The food is fresh and delicious.
