Margerum Wine Company has two tasting room experiences, one near the waterfront in Santa Barbara at the Hotel Californian and the other at their winery in Buellton. The Margerum Estate Vineyard is located in the newly designated Los Olivos District AVA in the Santa Ynez Valley. Margerum transformed the 18 acre vineyard to specialize exclusively on Rhône grape varietals, with the goal of becoming the premier grower of these varietals in Santa Barbara County. The acreage is divided between limestone hillsides and gravelly alluvial flatlands along Alamo Pintado Creek. The Margerum Estate Vineyard grapes are grown for their Margerum M5 white and red as well as for their single vineyard Syrah program. The varieties planted include Grenache, Mourvèdre, Cinsault, and Counoise as well as five hillside blocks planted to different clones of Syrah; some own rooted and some co-planted with Viognier. These red grapes from the Estate Vineyard will be the backbone of Margerum's M5 red wine blend.
Doug Margerum has been involved in the Santa Barbara food and wine scene for decades. Upon graduating from UCSB, his family purchased Santa Barbara's Wine Cask restaurant which became one of 74 restaurants in the world to earn the Wine Spectator Grand Award, and was later sold. The Margerum Wine Company itself began in a tiny 240 square foot cold room behind Brander Vineyards. The philosophy: return wine making to its previous form of production - handcrafted and personal.
Margerum Wine Company is committed to creating handcrafted wines using only the highest quality grapes so that they can make wines that are indicative of the place where they are grown. Margerum strives to make wines naturally, to make wines that have individual characteristics and to make wines with personality. The scale of production is kept at a level where they can touch and know the wine as it is raised to the bottle - the antithesis of mass production. The standards of quality are measured by Margerum's criteria - not by external sources. Margerum makes wines they personally enjoy - some to drink young; others for long aging in cool cellars for their children to enjoy. Share Margerum Wine Company wines with your family and friends at the table where they belong.
